As part of the “Roundtable on Türkiye–Indonesia Bilateral Relations in the Fields of Media, Communication and Public Diplomacy”, organised under the coordination of the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications, the existing cooperation between the two countries in the fields of media, communication and public diplomacy, as well as opportunities for new joint initiatives, were discussed.
The roundtable was attended by Prof. Talip Küçükcan, the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, and ASEAN; ReşatUğur Karacan, the Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Jakarta; and Assoc. Prof. Burak Güneş, the Communications Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Jakarta; Prof. Kılıç Buğra Kanat, Research Director at SETA Foundation in Washington D.C.; Assoc. Prof. Oğuz Güner, the Head of the Department of Public Diplomacy of the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency; Prof. Erman Akıllı, a Faculty Member at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University; Fritz Edward Siregar, Assistant to the Special Advisor to the President of Indonesia for Communications; Farida Dewi Maharani, the Director of Media Ecosystem at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs of Indonesia; Hendra Oktavianus, the Director of Information and Media at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia; Ani Nigeriawati, the Director of Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia; Danny Warmadewa, the Director for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia; Dr Mego Pinandito, the Director General of the National Archives the Republic of Indonesia; Prof. Komaruddin Hidayat, the Chair of the Indonesian Press Council; Virgandhi Prayudantoro, the News Director and Editor-in-Chief of the ANTARA News Agency; Daulat Pane, the Head of the News Team at the Radio Republik Indonesia; Arif Adi Kuswardono, Director of News Programmes at Televisi Republik Indonesia; and RiefianFajarsyah, the CEO of Produksi Film Negara (PFN).
The meeting featured an exchange of Türkiye’s and Indonesia’s experiences in public diplomacy, alongside discussions on strategic communications, combating disinformation, digital media, the impact of artificial intelligence on communication processes, and enhancing the communication capacities of public institutions.
The participants emphasised that the timely dissemination of accurate, reliable information to the public is critical to enhancing societal resilience against disinformation in the digital age.
The discussions also covered the two countries’ public diplomacy strategies, as well as initiatives undertaken in the areas of cultural diplomacy, gastrodiplomacy, nation branding, and international promotion. The participants emphasised the importance of further strengthening institutional cooperation through joint events, training programmes, and the exchange of experiences.
The meeting also reviewed the opportunities and risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence technologies in communications. Participants emphasised the importance of international cooperation on large language models, data security, digital sovereignty, and efforts to counter AI-enabled disinformation, and noted that the two sides could pursue joint initiatives to strengthen the information ecosystem and improve digital literacy across societies.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to establishing joint working mechanisms, maintaining regular consultations, and advancing concrete joint projects to further strengthen institutional cooperation between Türkiye and Indonesia in the fields of media, communications, and public diplomacy on a sustainable basis.
