A Bridge of Flavours in Tokyo: Turkish Cuisine Workshop Held

The longstanding bonds of friendship between Türkiye and Japan were further strengthened through a gastronomy workshop held in Tokyo.

The “Turkish Cuisine Workshop in Tokyo”, organised to promote cultural exchange between Türkiye and Japan, foster mutual interest between the peoples of the two countries, and strengthen Türkiye’s cultural diplomacy capacity, was hosted by the Yunus Emre Institute in Tokyo.

Highlighting the unifying power of gastronomy, the programme introduced the Japanese public to the centuries-old culinary heritage of Turkish cuisine. The programme was attended by members of diplomatic missions and Japan’s cultural and artistic community, as well as members of the press and invited guests.

Cultural ties between the two countries highlighted

During the opening session, Deputy Head of Communications Ferhat Pirinççi and Türkiye’s Ambassador to Tokyo Oğuzhan Ertuğrul addressed the participants.

In their opening remarks, they noted that the historic ties of friendship between Türkiye and Japan were being further deepened through cultural and public diplomacy, and emphasised that gastronomy serves as one of the most effective bridges between societies.

Japanese guests experience Turkish cuisine first-hand

Following the opening remarks, the Turkish Cuisine Workshop offered participants a hands-on introduction to the richness, deep-rooted heritage and tradition of sharing that characterise Turkish culinary culture. Led by Turkish chef Mehmet Dikmen, who is based in Japan, the workshop provided a step-by-step demonstration of how traditional Turkish dishes are prepared, including the key ingredients used and distinctive cooking techniques.

Following an introduction to the role of these dishes in Turkish culinary culture and the cultural traditions they embody, participants had the opportunity to experience some of the distinctive flavours of Turkish cuisine during the presentation and tasting session.

Cultural diplomacy and mutual engagement strengthened

Built around the universal language of gastronomy, the programme enhanced the international visibility of Türkiye’s cultural heritage while further strengthening the bonds of friendship and cultural cooperation between the two countries. The gathering in Tokyo is expected to make an important contribution to Türkiye’s international promotion vision and public diplomacy efforts.
