Panel on “A Fairer World Is Possible” held in Germany

The Presidency's Directorate of Communications organised the panel titled "A Fairer World Is Possible" in Berlin, the capital of Germany, to discuss how international institutions, including the United Nations (UN) and the UN Security Council (UNSC), should be reformed to build a fairer world for all.

The panel titled "Stratcom Public Forum: A Fairer World Is Possible" started with a message from the Presidency's Head of Communications, Fahrettin Altun.

The opening speech of the panel was delivered by the Ambassador of Türkiye to Berlin, Gökhan Turan, who emphasised that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan authored a book titled "A Fairer World Is Possible".

Turan emphasised that humanity is currently confronted with a variety of developments, including global issues, advances in technology, artificial intelligence, and the climate crisis, adding, "We are at a juncture where we require each other's assistance, particularly in adapting to these developments and resolving the issues we are confronted with. International cooperation is critical in that sense."

Turan noted that Türkiye is situated in a region that is considered the cradle of civilisations, and he stated, "We are a country that has long served as a bridge between cultures, economies, and ideas. Consequently, it is not surprising that Türkiye is a pioneer in fostering mutual dialogue and assuming responsibility for resolving global crises and issues.

Turan asserted that international organisations are obligated to collaborate in shaping the future, adding, "They should address a variety of issues, including the refugee crisis, economic challenges, climate change, and environmental concerns, and review the existing global systems. We must ensure that these systems are considerably more inclusive, thorough, and goal-oriented."

Turan stated that the nature of international relations has altered as a result of hybrid threats and that Türkiye has always made significant efforts to combat disinformation while also supporting global peace, tranquility, and stability.

"Türkiye is currently undertaking a major diplomatic endeavour."

Enes Bayraklı, Head of the International Relations Department at the Turkish-German University, moderated the panel, and the former German Ambassador to Ankara, Eckart Cuntz, emphasised the necessity of UN reform.

Underlining that a fairer world is possible while emphasising that a more influential world should also be "possible," Cuntz stated, "There are five permanent members. Each of these members has the right to veto. As a result, the system becomes incapacitated if any of these five nations exercises their veto power over a UN Security Council decision. Thus, making the delivery of a crucial decision quite challenging. So the process turns into a gridlock. Therefore, it is imperative that the United Nations Security Council be reformed."

Cuntz confessed that they had "somewhat overlooked" the significance of positive relations between Germany and Türkiye during his tenure as ambassador, adding, "So, we were late in understanding the importance of Türkiye. Türkiye is now engaged in a major diplomatic endeavour.
