Mobile Journalism Workshop Held in Russia Under the Theme “Journalism for Juniors (J4J)”

The “Journalism for Juniors (J4J)” Mobile Journalism Workshop was held in Russia with the collaboration of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), the Directorate of Communications, and the Yunus Emre Institute.

The workshop took place in the Russian capital, Moscow, on 17–18–19 May. As part of the training programme, 20 students received instruction on introductory journalism, disinformation, fact-checking, social media content production, written and oral storytelling, mobile journalism, field production, video shooting with mobile devices, and mobile video editing. Upon completion of the training, students deployed in teams to generate their own video projects by employing the mobile journalism abilities they had acquired. Their projects focused on topics such as human stories, historical heritage, and the social and economic landscape of Russia.

The workshop brought together students from both Türkiye and Russia. Held under the motto “Everyone Has a Story,” the training programme aimed to show young participants how to use their mobile devices to tell the stories of their communities from their own perspectives while also equipping them with the tools to combat disinformation. The significance of this effort was also emphasised throughout the programme. In addition to theoretical knowledge, the students were instructed by highly experienced professionals from TRT in the art of filming and editing, which allowed them to create their own content.

As part of its social responsibility initiative, TRT has implemented the Journalism for Juniors project in 83 workshops across the globe, reaching more than 4,500 students from various social and geographical backgrounds, particularly those from disadvantaged groups.

Since 2022, TRT and the Yunus Emre Institute have jointly organised six different Mobile Journalism Workshops. These workshops, held in five countries, have reached a total of 225 students from various parts of the world.

Addressing the students during the programme, Hacı Murat Terzi, Communications Counsellor at the Turkish Embassy in Moscow, said: “This three-day Journalism for Juniors Workshop, organised in Moscow in cooperation with TRT, the Yunus Emre Institute, and the Directorate of Communications, goes far beyond a training programme—it is a valuable initiative aimed at building bridges between the young generations of two friendly nations. Media literacy, the fight against disinformation, and access to accurate information are among the top global priorities today.”

Ambassador Terzi also encouraged the participants with the following message: “You have three full and exciting days ahead of you.  Don’t hesitate to ask questions, share ideas, learn, and create. You are the voice, the pen, and the conscience of the future. Together, we can build a more informed, more just, and more transparent media landscape.”

At the program's conclusion, students were granted Mobile Journalism Certificates, and those who submitted exceptional video projects were awarded mobile filming kits as prizes.
