The Directorate of Communications organised the workshop titled "From Common Roots to New Horizons: Türkiye–Hungary Media Bridges" in cooperation with the Turkish Research Foundation (TAV) and the Foundation for Civic Hungary (PMA).
The opening remarks of the workshop were delivered by Prof Enes Bayraklı, Deputy Chair of TAV; Adam Kavecsánszki, Chairman of PMA; and Gözde Kirişçioğlu, Coordinator for International Media at the Directorate of Communications.
"Türkiye and Hungary are two friendly countries that complement each other"
Bayraklı stated that the workshop not only brought together important figures from the two countries but also provided an opportunity to discuss how the friendship rooted in historical ties could become more visible and sustainable on a new platform of communication and cooperation.
Stressing the importance of passing the friendship between the two countries to new generations, Bayraklı said, "Türkiye and Hungary are two friendly countries that complement each other in many areas today, with shared historical experiences, relationships based on mutual respect, and similar social dynamics."
Bayraklı emphasised that the two countries are facing both opportunities and challenges on digital platforms, indicating that disinformation has "become a global threat".
Bayraklı noted that the media does not only "undertake the task of conveying news" but also acts as "a bridge that shapes understanding between peoples, fosters intercultural dialogue, and upholds shared values."
Bayraklı stated that the workshop will cover the mutual perceptions of Türkiye and Hungarian media, the representation of shared historical narratives in the media, content production on digital platforms and collaborations, as well as potential exchange programmes for young journalists.
"Global challenges can only be addressed through joint efforts"
PMA Chairman Kavecsánszki stated that he had been interested in Türkiye-Hungary relations since his youth and described İstanbul as the "melting pot of cultures".
Kavecsánszki remarked that Europe owes a great deal to Türkiye, particularly in terms of "security", and stated, "In the 21st century, survival without cooperation is impossible. Global challenges can only be addressed through joint efforts."
Kavecsánszki recalled the statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary that “Hungarians lost the last century” and added, “Our goal is to win the 21st century. In this regard, we consider Türkiye a partner country.”
Kavecsánszki stressed the importance of the workshop, stating, "Today's meeting brings me immense joy. This event offers opportunities for cooperation."
Kavecsánszki underscored Hungary's "commitment to fighting for traditional values" and said, "The cooperation between Türkiye and Hungary is built on solid foundations."
Kavecsánszki also noted that "bridges have been built between the two countries" across a range of fields, from media to education.
"We have to be the voice of truth, and we must stand against falsehoods"
Kirişçioğlu, the International Media Coordinator of the Directorate of Communications, emphasised the importance of strengthening strategic cooperation between Türkiye and Hungary.
Kirişçioğlu said, "Knowledge is a vital source of power; however, when not used properly, it can turn into manipulation. Our duty is not only to convey information but also to be the voice of truth, and we must stand against falsehoods."
Kirişçioğlu stated that Hungary, like Türkiye, is a country that firmly defends its sovereignty and noted that the cooperation between the two countries would have a positive impact on both regional and global stability.
Kirişçioğlu emphasised the need for "mutually resident members of the press" in both Türkiye and Hungary, highlighting their desire to see members of the Hungarian press — particularly from the Hungarian News Agency and Hungarian Television — based in Türkiye.
Tomorrow, the Türkiye–Hungary Media Bridges workshop will continue with visits to various institutions and organisations.
