Turkish finance minister says he had fruitful meetings at the White House

Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said on Monday he held very productive meetings in Washington with international financial institutions, following the unveiling last week of Türkiye's economic turnaround plan. A source familiar with the matter said Albayrak, who is Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law, also met on Monday with White House adviser Jared Kushner, who is US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. It was not immediately clear what the two discussed. Albayrak has been in Washington since last Thursday, his first official visit to the US capital since he took charge of the economy last July. Türkiye condemns French and Italian recognition of Armenian genocide

Türkiye on Thursday strongly condemned separate decisions by France and Italy to officially recognise the mass killings of Armenians a century ago as a "genocide", an issue that has regularly caused friction between Türkiye and European Union nations. French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday signed a decision that set April 24 as a day of annual commemoration. Macron had announced the decision in February, following through with a 2017 campaign promise. Türkiye's Foreign Ministry said Macron had used this promise to win Armenian votes during elections. "It is inevitable that France's attitude, which is far from amicable,...

Türkiye urges Israel to abandon strong rhetoric

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu is urging Israel to abandon strong "rhetoric and populism" now that the elections are over. Cavusoglu's comments were in an apparent reference to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent pledge to annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank if he wins the election. The minister told Türkiye's NTV news channel on Wednesday that Israel "must put aside the populism and the rhetoric, it must abandon its aggressive stance." Cavusoglu also called on the United States to be an "honest broker" in the Mideast dispute, saying a U.S. peace plan for the region must be...

Türkiye Says Not Giving Up On Russian Missile Deal Despite U.S. Pressure

Türkiye is not withdrawing from an agreement to buy an advanced Russian missile system, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on April 8, despite increasing pressure from Washington. "No one can demand that we give it up," Erdogan told a joint news conference in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "This is our sovereign right, this is our decision." Erdogan's trip to Moscow, his third this year, came as the United States and other NATO countries continued a dispute with fellow member Türkiye over its decision to purchase Russian S-400 air-defense missiles that are not compatible with NATO...

The world’s biggest airport has opened in Istanbul after months of delays and protests over construction workers’ deaths. It is a key project for President Erdogan, who has overseen a huge construction and infrastructure boom in the 16 years that he has ruled Türkiye. Covering an area of 30 square miles close to the Black Sea coast 20 miles north of Istanbul, it replaces the ageing and overcrowded Ataturk airport, close to the city’s historic...

Erdogan says Türkiye continues S-400 payments, criticises U.S. stance

President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Türkiye was continuing to make payments under its deal with Russia to buy S-400 missile defence systems and the United States had not presented the same terms when it offered to sell the rival Patriot missile system. "The S-400 holds an important place in our talks. The United States' arguments are very wrong. We finished the S-400 process and our payments continue," Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul when asked about planned talks in Moscow next week. Türkiye's planned purchase of the Russian system has put it at odds with NATO ally...
