“Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications Model” in Greece

The success of the Presidency's Directorate of Communications in communicating Türkiye's arguments to the globe has served as a model for Greece.

As stated in a news article by the "Real News" daily, Greece was inspired by the success of "Türkiye's Communication Model," through which the Presidency's Directorate of Communications conducted international efforts to communicate Türkiye's arguments to the globe.

The article headlined "Communications Task Force Against Ankara" reports that "Greece has decided to establish a Directorate of Communications that will serve as a wall against Türkiye, and the initiative is proceeding swiftly."

The article adds, "The mission of this special group will be to provide communication coordination, manage information and data, and respond swiftly and harshly to any and all Turkish communications-related activities."

The news article notes that the Greek side has recognised inadequacies in communicative management of crises over the past two years and the necessity to develop a communication mosaic against Türkiye, underlining that the key message of a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece last week was "to direct Greece's constant counter-offensive in the face of Türkiye's communication efforts, which have recently gained substantial dynamism on multiple fronts."

The news article, which argues that the new "communications task force" established for this purpose would act as a bulwark against Türkiye, which has been exposing the inhumane treatment of irregular migrants by the Greek authorities for a long time, reports that Konstantinos Koutras, who worked as a diplomat at the Greek Embassy in Ankara, served as the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as the Consul General in New York, came to the fore as the Greek Director of Communications.

The Greek press had reported, "A Greek counterpart to Altun is needed"

The newspaper "Kathimerini" also published an article headlined "We must bring the Greek version of Fahrettin Altun to office."

The article's author, Sotiris Serbos, a faculty member at the Democritus University of Thrace, said that while reading Fahrettin Altun's interview with the newspaper dated July 24, he was thinking about the necessity of having a Greek counterpart.

The article, which recalls that the Presidency's Directorate of Communications was established in 2018 in Türkiye, which has grown in geopolitical dimension and power and increased its regional influence, underlines that the mission of this institution, directed by Fahrettin Altun, was to "strengthen the Türkiye brand in the international arena."

Indicating that Greece should undertake this task to overcome its weakness in this field, the article states, "Türkiye is advancing more disproportionately compared to the past since it is no longer the old Türkiye, as Altun emphasised. We must incorporate strategic communication into our policy tools for national security, as Türkiye has done."
