President Erdoğan’s busy G20 diplomacy

During the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rome, the capital of Italy, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met separately with EU leaders from the United States, France, Indonesia, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.

President Erdoğan, who took part in a family photoshoot on the first day of the Leaders' Summit, later attended a special session themed "Global Economy and Global Health."

Prior to the session, President Erdoğan spent some time speaking with President Joe Biden of the US, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres, and he began bilateral negotiations after the session.

President Erdoğan first met with the President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The meeting lasted 30 minutes and was also attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

After receiving Leyen, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with Prime Minister Mario Draghi of Italy. During a half-hour meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Treasury and Finance Lütfi Elvan, Presidency's Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun, AK Party Deputy Chairman and Spokesperson Ömer Çelik and Minister of Foreign Affairs Luigi Di Maio of Italy were also present.

Following a half-hour meeting with Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands, President Erdoğan met with President Joko Widodo of Indonesia.

Following the meetings, President Erdoğan and First Lady Emine Erdoğan attended a dinner hosted by President Sergio Mattarella of Italy in honour of the G20 leaders and their spouses.

Meeting with Biden

On the second day of the Summit, President Erdoğan began his bilateral contacts with US President Joe Biden. The meeting lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes.

During the meeting between President Erdoğan and US President Biden, the two countries issued a joint declaration of intent to strengthen and enhance relations, and it was agreed to establish a joint mechanism in this regard.

The meeting, which took place in a friendly atmosphere, addressed bilateral relations and regional issues.

The NATO alliance and the platform for the strategic partnership were stressed during the meeting, where mutual actions to be taken in line with the joint perspective of increasing trade volume between the two countries were discussed. The meeting also highlighted countries’ satisfaction with each other’s climate change measures.

President Erdoğan receives German Chancellor Merkel

Following a 50-minute meeting with President Emmanuel Macron of France as part of the G20 Leaders' Summit, President Erdoğan met with President of the European Council Charles Michel.

President Erdoğan had his last meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany as part of the Summit.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Minister of Treasury and Finance Lütfi Elvan, Presidency's Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun, AK Party Deputy Chairman and Spokesperson Ömer Çelik were also present at the meeting, which lasted about 30 minutes.

Olaf Scholz, who was invited to the meeting by Chancellor Merkel and is currently negotiating to form a new coalition government in Germany, also attended the meeting.

After the bilateral meetings, President Erdoğan held a press conference, answered journalists’ questions and concluded his contacts at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rome.
