President Erdoğan receives conjoined twin brothers Derman and Yiğit

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received the conjoined twin brothers Derman and Yiğit, who are from Antalya, and Dr. Noor Ul Owase Jeelani, who performed the surgery on the twins in the United Kingdom and thus enabled them to be separated.

The reception at the Presidential Complex was also attended by President Erdoğan's wife Emine Erdoğan, Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca, and the couple, Fatma and Ömer Evrensel.

President Erdoğan and his wife Emine Erdoğan received information about the conjoined twins’ state of health from their parents and Dr. Jeelani. Erdoğan presented the twins with toys and had their photo taken with the Evrensel family and Dr. Jeelani.

Their heads separated with three major surgeries in London

The twins of Fatma and Ömer Evrensel, who were born by caesarean section with their heads joined to each other in the district of Alanya on June 22, 2018, have been treated in various hospitals in Antalya and İstanbul; Emine Erdoğan saw the twins during a visit to a hospital in Antalya in 2018, and she has closely followed their treatment process up to date.

The surgery was performed on the conjoined twins at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, by a team led by Dr. Owase Jeelani, a paediatric neurosurgeon experienced in the field, who has previously performed three similar surgeries.

Derman and Yiğit, whose conjoined heads were separated on January 28 after three major surgeries performed by a team of 42 that included two Turkish physicians, returned to Turkey on June 10.

The treatment of the conjoined twins continues at the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital within Ankara City Hospital.
