The Presidency's Directorate of Communications held a panel on "The United Nations Security Council Reform: A New Approach to Reconstructing the International Order" in Rome, the capital of Italy.
The panel held at the Westin Excelsior Hotel was attended by the Presidency’s Deputy Director of Communications Çağatay Özdemir (PhD), Türkiye's Ambassador to Rome Ömer Gücük, Türkiye's Ambassador to the Holy See Lütfullah Göktaş, the TRNC Rome Representative Mustafa Davulcu and many guests.
In the panel moderated by Research Director at the SETA Foundation at Washington DC Assoc Prof Kılıç Buğra Kanat, the reform demands for the UN Security Council (UNSC) were addressed in light of current international developments by Italy's former Ambassador to Ankara Carlo Marsili, Faculty Member at Trento University’s Faculty of Law and School of International Relations Prof Giuseppe Nesi, Scientific Director of Observatory on Türkiye at the Centre for Politics and International Studies (CeSPI) Valeria Giannotta, Faculty Member at Haliç University Assoc Prof Aylin Ünver Noi and Faculty Member at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazit University Prof Yücel Acer.
The panel pointed out how the international community and international organisations faced significant challenges in the face of numerous problems in recent years, how the international system was ineffective in addressing these challenges, and also emphasised the critical need for a UNSC reform.
The panel discussed topics such as the permanent membership system in the UNSC, the right of veto, and the issue of representation, as well as Türkiye's and Italy's proposals for the UN reform, highlighting the opportunities for cooperation that could be achieved within this framework.
