National Security Council Statement dated May 28, 2024

National Security Council Statement dated May 28, 2024

The National Security Council convened on May 28, 2024, under the chairmanship of the President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

During the meeting;

1. The Council was briefed on the operations that have been carried out with determination, resolve, and success at home and abroad against all types of threats and dangers to our national unity and solidarity, as well as our survival, including the terrorist organisations PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG, FETO, and DAESH.

2. Emphasising that the expansion of the contractual basis between our countries will further enhance our coordination and cooperation with our neighbour Iraq, it was stated that the solid progress to be made in the field of security will strengthen our joint efforts for the development of our region.

3. It was highlighted that the PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG, which has rendered the lands it seized in Iraq and Syria into a nest of terrorism, and the support provided to it would be eliminated together with all its elements in our region, and that no opportunity will be given to any fait accompli in violation of our national security and the territorial integrity of our neighbours.

4. It was stated that the practices aimed at silencing the voices raised all over the world for Israel, which continues its massacres in Gaza while ignoring its responsibilities under international law to put an end to its crimes against humanity, have once again exposed the insincerity of those claiming to defend the rule of law, democracy, and freedom of expression. In response, it is vital to raise the number of countries on the right side of history that recognise the State of Palestine, as well as to step up efforts to bring those accountable for the massacre to justice.

5. The most recent developments in the war, which have deteriorated the humanitarian situation in Ukraine on a daily basis, were discussed, and the possibilities for establishing a just and lasting peace as soon as possible were evaluated; the importance of continuing efforts to strengthen navigation safety in the Black Sea in collaboration with the littoral states was emphasised.

6. Our hope that the positive developments in the negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia will result in a peaceful settlement and our support for all good-faith efforts aimed at establishing a lasting peace were reaffirmed.

7. It was noted that advances in artificial intelligence provide significant opportunities that can usher in a new phase in human history, yet this potential also entails a host of new challenges and emerging threats in cyberspace. It was emphasised that Türkiye must prioritise being prepared for the scientific, military, economic, and social ramifications of artificial intelligence research, and developing advanced capabilities in this field.

Respectfully submitted to the public's attention.
