July 15 commemoration events abroad

On the 9th anniversary of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, commemorative events have been organised in numerous countries.

Germany

A commemoration event themed "The Name of Victory: Türkiye" was held in Cologne, Germany, to mark July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. The event held at the Consulate General of Türkiye in Cologne, Germany, began with the singing of the Turkish National Anthem and the recitation of the Holy Qur’an.

In his speech at the event, Hüseyin Kantem Al, the Consul General of Türkiye in Cologne, stated that the Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO) targeted not only state institutions but also the constitutional order, democracy, and the unity of the nation through its coup attempt.

Al stated that during FETO's treacherous coup attempt, 253 people were martyred and more than 2,000 were injured, emphasising that each of them is a hero who sacrificed their lives for freedom and democracy.

In the speeches delivered during the commemoration event, the coup attempt by FETO was strongly condemned.

At the end of the event, crescent-and-star balloons bearing the names of the martyrs were released into the sky.

July 15, Democracy and National Unity Day events were held in Berlin

Events marking July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, under the theme “The Name of Victory: Türkiye”, were held in Berlin, the capital of Germany. The commemoration ceremony took place at the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Berlin. It began with a moment of silence in memory of the martyrs, followed by the recitation of the Turkish National Anthem. Turkish Ambassador to Berlin, Gökhan Turan, delivered a speech during the ceremony.

United States of America (USA)

The Embassy of Türkiye in Washington organised a commemoration event in the US capital to mark the ninth anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt of July 15.

The commemoration event was attended by the Turkish Ambassador to Washington, Sedat Önal, as well as members of Congress, former ambassadors, diplomats, representatives of foreign missions and civil society, and citizens from the Turkish-American community.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Önal stated that they had gathered to commemorate the Turkish people, who had made great sacrifices to protect democracy against the coup attempt staged by the Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO) on July 15, 2016.

At the ceremony, former US Ambassador to Ankara James Jeffrey highlighted that tremendous progress has been achieved against FETO both domestically and abroad in the nine years since the coup. He also stated that, for the first time in decades, he has witnessed such a close relationship between the US and Türkiye today.

Osama Jamal, Secretary General of the United States Council for Muslim Organisations (USCMO), emphasised that the July 15 coup attempt was not only an attack on the elected government but, even more so, an assault on the will of the people.

Republican members of the House of Representatives, Ryan Zinke from Minnesota and Pete Sessions from Texas, also sent video messages emphasising their appreciation for the Turkish people’s defence of the country on the night of the coup attempt and the struggle they engaged in.

The event hosted by the Consul General of Türkiye to New York, Ambassador Muhittin Ahmet Yazal, at the Turkevi Centre was attended by Mehmet Dana, the Representative of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in New York; Uğur İbrahim Altay, the Mayor of Konya Municipality; local and foreign personnel of the diplomatic mission, as well as representatives from non-governmental organisations and citizens.

Consul General Yazal said that the Turkish nation owes its lands, language, faith, and culture to its ancestors who made the ultimate sacrifice for their homeland.

Following the screening of a video about the attempted coup, the attendees visited the July 15 exhibition, which was installed on the ground floor of the Turkevi Centre.

In New York, as part of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, vehicles equipped with LED screens showcased visuals and texts illustrating the resistance and determination of the Turkish people in response to the events of the July 15 coup attempt as they traversed the streets that house institutions such as the United Nations (UN) complex and Turkevi Centre.

Albania

A commemoration event was held in Tirana, the capital of Albania, to mark July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The event, held by the Embassy of Türkiye in Tirana at the July 15 Democracy Martyrs' Monument in the Grand Lake Park in Tirana, was attended by the Ambassador of Türkiye to Tirana, Tayyar Kağan Atay, representatives of Turkish institutions and organisations in the country, as well as Turkish and Albanian citizens and guests.

During the event, prayers were offered for the July 15 martyrs, and photographs taken during and after the coup attempt were also displayed.

Austria

The martyrs of July 15 were commemorated at the programme held in Vienna, the capital of Austria, on July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The commemoration event, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Vienna under the theme "The Name of Victory: Türkiye", was attended by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Vienna, Gürsel Dönmez; Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Vienna, Ambassador Levent Eler; Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Ambassador Zeynep Kızıltan; Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Vienna, Azad Aslanov; and representatives of various non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The event featuring footage from the night of the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, kicked off with an address by Ambassador Dönmez.

Dönmez stated that he was in Ankara on the night of the coup attempt, personally witnessed the events, and observed the resilience and perseverance of people from different political backgrounds and added, "We are a strong nation."

After the address of Ambassador Dönmez, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the July 15 martyrs, followed by the National Anthem. Then, prayers were offered for the martyrs.

An exhibition of photographs depicting the coup attempt and its aftermath was presented to the participants.

Azerbaijan

A commemoration ceremony was held at Türkiye's Embassy in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The event was attended by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Baku, Birol Akgün; Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samir Sharifov; embassy counsellors; representatives from Turkish institutions and organisations in Baku; Azerbaijani MPs; and other invited guests.

Speaking at the event, which commenced with the recitation of the Turkish National Anthem and the Azerbaijani National Anthem, Ambassador Akgün commemorated the heroic martyrs with mercy and gratitude.

In his address, Akgün emphasised that July 15 was a watershed moment in Türkiye's recent history, stating, "The treacherous attack against our democracy and national unity was repelled by our nation's determination, courage, and democratic resistance."

Recalling that state institutions were targeted by aircraft and helicopters and that citizens were martyred by bombs, tanks, and heavy weapons, Akgün remarked, "The greatest credit for thwarting this treacherous attempt—where even crowds, ambulances, and police vehicles were ordered to be fired upon—belongs to the Turkish nation, which demonstrated a readiness to sacrifice their lives in defence of the state and its democratic achievements. The name of victory is Türkiye."

Akgün noted that, on July 15, Democracy and National Unity Day, the struggle, solidarity, and heroism exhibited by the nation under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are once again remembered with gratitude.

Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sharifov, highlighted the unity and resilience displayed by the Turkish nation on July 15, stating, “The heinous coup attempt failed. The Turkish nation, in solidarity, transformed that dark night into a heroic epic in the history of the state.”

Sharifov said, "We commemorate, with mercy, all martyrs who sacrificed their lives for democracy and stability. Azerbaijan and Türkiye have always stood by each other and will continue to do so."

The event featured the screening of videos depicting the events that unfolded during the July 15 coup attempt.

Teachers and students from the Azerbaijan International Maarif Schools performed a musical recital.

The programme, which featured a photo exhibition of the July 15 coup attempt through the lenses of Anadolu Agency’s photojournalists, concluded with a recitation of the Holy Qur'an by Furkan Çınar, the world champion of the Holy Qur'an Recitation Competition, and a prayer led by Kadir Dinç, Vice President of the Directorate of Religious Affairs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan also shared a message of support to Türkiye on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

In the post shared on the Ministry’s X account, July 15, 2016, was characterised as a glorious date on which the Turkish people steadfastly upheld their state and national will.

The message read, "We honour the cherished memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to thwart the coup attempt, with deep respect and gratitude. The epic forged through the unity and determination of the Turkish nation serves as a testament to the contribution to peace, stability, and the preservation of shared values. May your Democracy and National Unity Day be blessed, beloved Türkiye."

July 15 martyrs commemorated in Baku

A commemoration event was held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, for those who were martyred in the treacherous coup attempt of the Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO).

Turkish Ambassador to Baku Birol Akgün, Vice President of the Directorate of Religious Affairs Kadir Dinç, Religious Counsellor İhsan Açık, the world champion of the Holy Qur'an Recitation Competition Furkan Çınar and many citizens attended the commemoration event organised by the Office of the Counsellor of Religious Services of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Baku at the Turkish Martyrs Mosque.

During the event, the Holy Quran was recited, and prayers were offered for the martyrs.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

On the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, the panel "The Name of Victory: Türkiye" was organised by the Directorate of Communications in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The panel held at the Gazi Husrev Beg Library in Sarajevo was attended by the Croatian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željko Komšić; the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Zvizdić; the Turkish Ambassador to Sarajevo, Emin Akseki; Bosnian officials; representatives of Turkish institutions and organisations; and numerous guests.

In his address, Komšić stated that he was fully aware of the significance of July 15 for the Turkish people.

Zvizdić, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated that FETO had attempted a treacherous and cowardly coup and emphasised that the Turkish nation defended democracy on July 15.

Noting that the putschists underestimated the strength of the institutions and the advanced awareness of the Turkish nation, which loves its state and respects its institutions, Zvizdić said, "We have always stood by the legitimate and democratically elected institutions of Türkiye. Türkiye is a friendly country to us — an important state that offers us strong support and consistently stands by the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina."

Ambassador Akseki stated that FETO, which emerged in the 1970s, initially presented itself to the Turkish public as a non-governmental organisation operating in the field of education, committed to this cause, and possessing a religious character.

Speaking at the panel moderated by Assoc. Prof. Veysel Kurt from İstanbul Medeniyet University, Adis Alagić, former Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Ankara, stated that FETO attempted a coup against Türkiye’s legitimately elected leaders.

Emphasising that the coup attempt was an attack not only on the legitimate administration but also on Türkiye's future, Alagić said, "That night we felt shock and fear. Especially when I thought about the many acquaintances I have living in Türkiye, I was in even greater concern. However, because I knew the situation, I trusted in the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the courage of the Turkish people. Nine years later, I believe Bosnia and Herzegovina needs to discuss this issue more.

University of Zenica, Faculty of Law, Faculty Member Prof Enis Omerovic noted that he saw July 15 as a symbol of resistance against violence, a struggle for constitutional order and democracy, and a symbol of the will of the Turkish people.

TRT Balkan Director Emre Baştuğ remarked that FETO's media organisation possesses an international network and is engaged in activities within the Balkans as well.

Following the panel discussion, the film “15/07: Break of Dawn” was screened.

A minute of silence was observed in memory of the July 15 martyrs, followed by the playing of the National Anthem during the morning programme held at the Turkish Embassy in Sarajevo.

After the commemoration ceremony at the embassy, Akseki and the accompanying delegation proceeded to the Kovači Martyrs' Cemetery and prayed for the martyrs there. A prayer programme was organised at the historic Gazi Husrev Beg Mosque in Sarajevo.

As part of the commemoration events, an exhibition consisting of photographs by Anadolu Agency (AA) photojournalists depicting the events of July 15 was also held by the Sarajevo Yunus Emre Institute in Baščaršija.

Belarus

A commemoration ceremony was held in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The Turkish Ambassador to Minsk, Güçlü Cem Işık, and the embassy staff attended the ceremony held at the Turkish Embassy in Minsk.

Ambassador Işık delivered a speech at the event, which began with a minute of silence in remembrance of the July 15 martyrs and the recitation of the Turkish National Anthem.

An exhibition of photographs themed around July 15 was presented during the programme, which concluded with a prayer for the martyrs of July 15.

Belgium

A commemoration programme was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Brussels on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The programme, hosted by Özgür Çakar, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. and First Counsellor at the Embassy of Türkiye in Brussels, began with a minute of silence. Following the screening of a short film portraying the events of the night of July 15, 2016, Ali Bayır, the religious official of the Brussels Fatih Mosque, recited a prayer for the martyrs.

The ceremony was attended by Türkiye's Permanent Delegate to the European Union, Ambassador Faruk Kaymakcı; Türkiye's Permanent Representative to NATO, Ambassador Basat Öztürk; Türkiye's Consul General in Brussels, Onur Sevim; Türkiye's Consul General in Antwerp, İsmail Sefa Yüceer; the Head of the Turkish Military Delegation to NATO, Lieutenant General Kemal Turan; military officials; and many guests.

In his speech, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. Çakar emphasised that FETO's coup attempt was thwarted thanks to the determined stance of the nation and said, "The plotters of this treacherous attempt against our democracy failed thanks to the joint resolve of our people and our state to defend democracy under the leadership of our President and their heroic resistance, putting their lives on the line."

Bulgaria

A commemoration ceremony was held in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The ceremony, held at the Residence of the Turkish Embassy in Sofia, was attended by members of the Bulgarian Parliament, a delegation from the Chief Mufti's Office of the Bulgarian Muslims, diplomats, and members of the press.

At the ceremony, a moment of silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives in the coup attempt, followed by the national anthems of Bulgaria and Türkiye.

In his speech, Ambassador Mehmet Sait Uyanık stated that July 15 is one of the most significant days in the recent history of the Republic of Türkiye and said, "The attempted invasion targeting the unity and integrity, independence, freedom, and democracy of the Republic of Türkiye was suppressed by the courage of our citizens and the resolve of our state."

At the ceremony, following a prayer recited by Mustafa Alish Hadzi, Grand Mufti of the Muslim Community in Bulgaria, guests toured the photo exhibition entitled "July 15 and Memory," organised by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, which featured photographs taken by Anadolu Agency photojournalists and was set up in the courtyard of the residence.

Morocco

The ceremony organised by the Embassy of Türkiye in Rabat was attended by Ambassador of Türkiye to Rabat M. İlker Kılıç, Director of the Yunus Emre Institute in Rabat Reha Ermumcu, Moroccan officials, representatives of foreign missions in Morocco, Embassy personnel, and Turkish citizens living in Morocco.

In his speech at the ceremony, Ambassador Kılıç said that the commemoration event symbolises the resistance of the Turkish nation against the coup attempt by FETO on July 15, 2016, and the victory of democracy.

Palestine

A commemoration programme was held at the Consulate General of Türkiye in Jerusalem to Palestine on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The event, attended by the Turkish Consul General in Jerusalem to Palestine, Ambassador İsmail Çobanoğlu, and the staff of the Consulate General, began with a moment of silence and the recitation of the National Anthem.

During the event, Ambassador Çobanoğlu remarked that July 15 represented a notably challenging and prolonged night for the Turkish nation.

The Ambassador stated that the Palestinian people showed a great example of solidarity with the Turkish people, mentioning that Palestinians prayed for Türkiye on the night of July 15.

South Africa

The event hosted by the Consul General of Türkiye to Cape Town, Yonca Sunel, at the Consulate General building was attended by the representatives of Turkish institutions, Turkish residents in South Africa, and South African guests.

The programme began with a minute of silence for the July 15 martyrs, followed by the Turkish National Anthem.

Consul General Sunel delivered an address at the event, commemorating all the martyrs with gratitude and mercy and highlighting the importance of upholding unity and solidarity.

Following the programme, Sunel and his entourage visited the "Memorial Garden for July 15 Martyrs" at the Tana Baru Cemetery, the final resting place of Ottoman scholar Abu Bakr Effendi, and commemorated those who lost their lives in the coup attempt with prayers.

Georgia

A commemoration programme was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Tbilisi on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The programme, hosted by Türkiye's Ambassador to Tbilisi Ali Kaan Orbay at the embassy, began with a moment of silence followed by the recitation of the Turkish national anthem.

In his speech at the ceremony, Ambassador Orbay said, "On the night of July 15, 2016, our country underwent a serious ordeal with the coup attempt by FETO, which had infiltrated various components and institutions of our state."

Stating that FETO is a terrorist and criminal organisation operating in various fields, Orbay said, "FETO is a multi-layered international and secret cell-based terrorist and organised criminal organisation with a cult-like nature rarely seen in history, which sometimes presents itself as a non-governmental organisation, sometimes as an educational institution, and sometimes under the guise of a religious community, all while seeking to advance its hidden agenda."

During the programme, which included a presentation on the events of the night of July 15, 2016, and its aftermath, prayers were offered for the martyrs.

The Netherlands

The martyrs of July 15 were commemorated at the programme themed "The Name of Victory: Türkiye" held at the Turkish Embassy in The Hague on July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The programme, which began with the Turkish national anthem, a moment of silence, and a recitation from the Holy Quran, was attended by embassy staff, heads of Turkish missions in the Netherlands, representatives of the Turkish community in the country, Turkish businesspeople, and numerous guests.

The Turkish consuls general in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Deventer were also present at the ceremony.

In his speech at the ceremony, the Ambassador to The Hague, Selçuk Ünal, said that the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, was a treacherous coup attempt against Türkiye's constitutional order, the elected will of the people, the President, the Parliament, and all democratic institutions.

At the end of the ceremony, visitors were treated to halva.

Iraq

The Turkish Consulate General in Erbil held a ceremony to commemorate the martyrs on the occasion of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

The event was attended by many citizens, as well as Türkiye's Consul General in Erbil, Erman Topçu, officials from the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (IKRG), and representatives of Turkish institutions and companies in Erbil.

The event, which began with a minute of silence in remembrance of the July 15 martyrs and the recitation of the Turkish National Anthem, continued with the recitation of the Holy Quran.

During the event, a tour of the exhibition of photographs taken by Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondents on the night of July 15 was organised.

In his speech here, Consul General Topçu said, "We are a nation in love with its independence and freedom. This stance represents the essence of our thousands of years of history and state tradition. Our struggle, under the leadership of the President, against the heinous coup attempt on the evening of July 15, 2016, nine years ago, is a contemporary and glorious epitome of this historical stance."

The United Kingdom

A commemoration programme was held in London, the capital of the United Kingdom, on the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The commemoration programme, hosted by Türkiye's Ambassador to London, Osman Koray Ertaş, began with a moment of silence followed by the recitation of the Turkish National Anthem.

Speaking at the commemoration programme, Ambassador Ertaş said, "The treacherous coup attempt perpetrated by the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) nine years ago today was defeated thanks to our august nation and heroic security forces."

Stating that July 15 was a significant test for Türkiye, Ertaş said, "FETO members who lacked national consciousness failed to account for our nation's loyalty to its state. We are proud that we passed this test with our honour intact."

The programme ended with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Abdülhamit Kahraman, Imam of the London Diyanet Mosque.

July 15 on the streets of London

In London, the capital of England, vehicles equipped with LED screens showcased visuals and texts illustrating the resistance and determination of the Turkish people in response to the events of the July 15 coup attempt as they traversed the streets.

In conjunction with the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, vehicles equipped with LED screens that circulated in London's government institutions, parliament, and historical and tourist structures conveyed the story of the Turkish people's resistance to the July 15 coup attempt by FETO.

Expressions such as "The Name of Democracy: Türkiye," "The Name of Courage: Türkiye," "The Name of Faith: Türkiye," "The Name of Heroism: Türkiye," "The Name of Solidarity: Türkiye," and "The Name of Independence: Türkiye" were displayed on the vehicles with footage from the night of the attempted coup.

The vehicles equipped with LED screens toured landmark locations, including Buckingham Palace, the UK Parliament, and Whitehall, home to the ministries.

Moreover, digital billboards at certain locations displayed images and texts demonstrating the Turkish people's struggle on July 15.

Sweden

Those who were martyred during the coup attempt perpetrated by the Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO) were honoured in the event held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Stockholm on the occasion of the "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

The event hosted by the Turkish Ambassador to Stockholm, Yönet Can Tezel, was attended by several diplomats and members of Turkish non-governmental organisations.

During the ceremony, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the July 15 martyrs, followed by the National Anthem.

During the event, a video covering the night of July 15, produced by the Directorate of Communications, was screened.

Martyrs of July 15 were commemorated at the event, where Kerim Birinci, the Counsellor for Social Affairs and Religious Services at the Embassy of Stockholm, offered prayers.

Italy

A commemoration programme was organised in Italy on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The commemoration ceremony hosted by the Turkish Ambassador to Rome, Elif Çomoğlu Ülgen, at the embassy in Rome, the capital city of Italy, was attended by numerous diplomats and guests, including the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Rome, Rashad Aslanov, the Chargé d'Affaires a.i. at the Turkish Embassy in Vatican City, Elif Okutucu, and the Representative of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in Rome, Mustafa Davulcu.

During the ceremony, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the July 15 martyrs, followed by the National Anthem. At the end of the ceremony, guests were treated to halva in memory of the July 15 Martyrs.

Qatar

Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar sent a congratulatory message to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the occasion of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

"The View Hospital" in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, was illuminated with the flags of Türkiye and Qatar on the occasion of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

In addition to the flags of the countries, the expression "Türkiye will always remember Qatar's support & solidarity" was projected in Turkish, English, and Arabic on the facade of "The View Hospital" building in the Katara district of Doha, alluding to the solidarity between the two countries.

President Erdoğan stated that on the night of the coup attempt on July 15, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar was the first person to call him and express his support for Türkiye in the face of the coup.

Emir Al Thani of Qatar had congratulated President Erdoğan for gathering the Turkish people around him against the failed coup attempt.

"July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day" event held by the Turkish Embassy in Doha

The Turkish Embassy in Doha held a ceremony to commemorate the martyrs on the occasion of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

The event organised by the Turkish Embassy in Doha was attended by the Turkish Ambassador to Doha, Dr. Mustafa Göksu, journalists İhsan Aktaş and Taha Hüseyin Karagöz, July 15 veteran Abdulkadir Can, and martyr relatives Mehmet İnci and Abdullah Çağrı İbiş, as well as representatives of Turkish institutions and organisations, Turkish citizens, diplomats, Qatari officials, and foreigners living in the country.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day" message was read, and the video "The Name of Victory: Türkiye" prepared by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications was screened.

Kyrgyzstan

A "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day" programme was held at the Turkish Embassy in Bishkek.

The programme was attended by staff members from Türkiye's Embassy in Bishkek, the Rectorate of Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University, the TİKA Bishkek Programme Coordination Office, the Turkish Red Crescent Society, officials from the Kyrgyz-Turkish Friendship State Hospital, management of the Kyrgyzstan Ahiska (Meskhetian) Turks Association, and citizens.

Speaking after a minute of silence and the recitation of the Turkish National Anthem, Türkiye's Ambassador to Bishkek, Mekin Mustafa Kemal Ökem, said, "We have come together on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day to commemorate our august martyrs and remember our heroic nation's struggle for democracy."

Recalling that members of FETO who had infiltrated the Turkish Armed Forces aimed to take over state institutions in Türkiye on the night of July 15, Ökem said, "The July 15 coup attempt was thwarted under the leadership of our President, with the determined stance of our security forces and the Turkish people. Since the coup attempt, judicial proceedings have been carried out. The perpetrators have been held accountable before justice. The networks of the terrorist organisation within state institutions have been dismantled."

Ökem noted that the struggle to eliminate FETO's structures in foreign countries continued.

Photo exhibition themed "The Name of Victory: Türkiye" held

On the other hand, a photo exhibition themed "The Name of Victory: Türkiye" was organised by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, hosted by the Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University (KTMU).

During the event, which continued with the commemoration programme, a film produced by TRT depicting the treacherous coup attempt that took place on July 15 was shown.

In his speech at the venue, Türkiye's Ambassador to Bishkek Ökem said that FETO was an organised espionage network with foreign connections.

Prof. Alpaslan Ceylan, Rector of Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University, stated that the July 15 coup attempt marked a dark day that left profound scars not only on Turkish history but across the entire Turkic world.

Ceylan commemorated the martyrs with mercy and the veterans with gratitude in his message shared on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

Kosovo

The ceremony in Kosovo's capital, Pristina, was hosted by the Ambassador of Türkiye to Pristina, Sabri Tunç Angılı, at the Ambassador's Residence.

The ceremony was attended by Fikrim Damka, President of the Kosovo Democratic Turkish Party (KDTP) and Minister of Regional Development, Ramush Haradinaj, President of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), KDTP MP Fidan Brina Jılta, as well as representatives of Turkish, local and international institutions and organisations in the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, which started with a moment of silence, the singing of the national anthems, and prayers for the souls of the martyrs, Ambassador Angılı noted that the fight against the Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO) continues with determination at home and abroad.

On the other hand, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, a commemoration event was also held in Mamusha, Kosovo's only Turkish municipality.

Costa Rica

A commemoration ceremony was held in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, to mark July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

At the ceremony organised by the Turkish Embassy in San Jose under the theme "THE NAME OF VICTORY: TÜRKİYE", martyrs were commemorated.

Speaking at the ceremony, Turkish Ambassador to San Jose, Naciye Gökçen Kaya, said, "Today, we have gathered here—thousands of kilometres away from our homeland—to commemorate our nation’s great victory for democracy, to honour our heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives without hesitation for the homeland, the nation, the flag, our independence, and all our sacred values, with hearts full of faith and love for the country, and to express our gratitude to our brave veterans."

The ceremony was attended by embassy staff and many guests.

Kuwait

A commemoration event was organised in Kuwait to mark July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The ceremony, organised by the Turkish Embassy in Kuwait, started with a moment of silence, the singing of the Turkish National Anthem, and the recitation of the Holy Quran.

In her speech at the ceremony, Ambassador of Türkiye to Kuwait Tuba Nur Sönmez pointed to the 9th anniversary of the coup attempt by FETO and commemorated the martyrs who lost their lives that night with mercy and more than 2,200 veterans with gratitude.

Underlining the resistance and spirit of unity shown by the Turkish nation in the face of the threat, Ambassador Sönmez emphasised that the coup attempt was foiled thanks to the unprecedented courage and solidarity displayed by both the public and the security forces that night.

In addition to the screening of an informative short film on July 15, a photo exhibition on the events that transpired on July 15, 2016, was also opened in the Embassy building.

The ceremony was attended by Abdulaziz al-Jarallah, Deputy Minister for International Organisations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, as well as many ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions, Turkish citizens, and Kuwaiti guests.

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)

Those who were martyred during FETO's coup attempt on July 15, 2016, were commemorated with a ceremony held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

In the TRNC, a ceremony was held at the Boğaz Martyrdom within the scope of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day commemoration events.

President Ersin Tatar, Speaker of the Republican Assembly Ziya Öztürkler, Turkish Ambassador to Lefkosa (Nicosia) Ali Murat Başçeri, Commander of the Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces Major General Sebahattin Kılınç, Commander of the Security Forces Major General İlker Görgülü and other military officials, as well as other officials and citizens attended the ceremony.

The ceremony started with the laying of wreaths at the Boğaz Martyrdom Monument and continued with the raising of flags accompanied by a moment of silence and the National Anthem.

Speaking at the ceremony, TRNC President Tatar said that during the FETO coup attempt on July 15, 2016, they endured distressing hours in TRNC and that they followed the developments with concern.

Tatar emphasised that it is vital for them that Türkiye has recovered from the July 15 coup attempt, regained stability, and stands by the Turkish Cypriots. He also said that he had personally heard that the Greeks were preparing to raise a flag at Girne Castle if the coup was successful.

TRNC President Ersin Tatar stated that the strengthening of Türkiye is very important for the TRNC and noted the following:

"With the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, millions of people took to the streets and repelled this treacherous attack with an epic resistance and defended Türkiye's democracy. The aim of the uprising was to devastate the nation, to strike a blow to the nation's democracy, and to threaten Türkiye's survival in the vast geography extending to the Eastern Mediterranean. I once again remember the heroes who prevented this from happening with respect and gratitude."

Türkiye's Ambassador to Lefkosa Ali Murat Başçeri said that July 15th was the victory of the nation, national will, and those who devoted themselves to democracy, stating, "On July 15th, our beloved nation both repelled a coup attempt and prevented an occupation attempt that aimed to take over our country."

The ceremony at the Boğaz Martyrdom ended with prayers after the speeches, leaving carnations on the graves of martyrs and visiting the nursery garden created in memory of the July 15 martyrs.

Photography exhibition opened at Ercan Airport

The Embassy of Türkiye in Lefkosa opened a "July 15" themed photo exhibition at the passenger terminals of Ercan Airport on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The exhibition, which will remain open for a week, will include photographs reflecting the events that took place during the FETO coup attempt on July 15, 2016, and the resistance of the Turkish people.

North Macedonia

A commemoration ceremony was held in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The ceremony held at the Official Residence of the Turkish Embassy in Skopje was attended by North Macedonia's President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, President of the Assembly Afrim Gashi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Izet Mexhiti, Chief of Staff Major General Saško Lafčiski, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timčo Mucunski, Minister of European Affairs Orhan Murtezani, President of the Islamic Religious Community of North Macedonia (Religious Affairs) Shaqir Fetahu, ministers, members of parliament, mayors, leaders and representatives of political parties in the country, representatives of Turkish institutions and organisations, and a large number of guests.

The programme began with a minute of silence, followed by the Turkish National Anthem.

Fatih Ulusoy, Ambassador of Türkiye to Skopje, recalled that 9 years have passed since FETO's treacherous coup attempt and said that they gathered to commemorate the martyrs and to remember the heroic Turkish nation's struggle for democracy.

Ulusoy stated that the coup attempt on July 15 was thwarted under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and with the determined stance of the Turkish people, saying, "July 15 is the victory of the nation."

During the programme, Sela and the Holy Quran were recited, and prayers were offered.

The guests visited the July 15 exhibition prepared with the contributions of Anadolu Agency (AA) and Yunus Emre Institute (YEE).

Libya

Türkiye's Embassy in Tripoli hosted a commemoration ceremony for July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The event was attended by Doğukan Arda Ülgen, Counsellor at the Turkish Embassy in Tripoli, members of the Turkish Armed Forces, embassy staff, and numerous guests.

The ceremony started with a minute of silence for the martyrs, followed by the rendering of the Turkish National Anthem and the recitation of the Holy Quran.

Speaking at the ceremony, Counsellor at the Embassy in Tripoli Ülgen said that on July 15, 2016, all segments of the Turkish nation, from young to old, did not give way to the treacherous ambitions of FETO terrorists with a determination and resolve rarely seen in history.

"In this tragic incident that targeted democracy and national will, a total of 253 citizens were martyred, and more than 2000 of our citizens became veterans," said Ülgen, expressing mercy for the many revered martyrs like Ömer Halisdemir and gratitude for the heroic veterans.

The ceremony ended with a prayer for the martyrs and veterans of July 15.

Lebanon

A commemoration programme was held in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The programme held at the Beirut Yunus Emre Institute was attended by the Ambassador of Türkiye to Beirut, Murat Lütem, the Coordinator of Beirut Yunus Emre Institute, Esra Yılmaz, the Education Counsellor of the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) to Beirut, Assoc. Prof. C. Turgut Koç, MoNE teachers, Lebanon Coordinator of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Turkish citizens living in Lebanon, embassy personnel, diplomats, and Sheikh Yahya al-Omeri from Lebanon's Dar al-Fatwa.

Speaking on the occasion of the programme, Ambassador Lütem said, "The pain and anger caused by this treacherous attempt, in which 251 heroic citizens were martyred and more than 2000 of our citizens were injured, remain fresh in our minds almost a decade later."

After the singing of the Turkish National Anthem in the programme, a recitation of the Holy Quran was performed by Omeri, an official from Lebanon's Dar al-Fatwa, followed by prayers for the martyrs of July 15.

During the event, an exhibition of photographs taken by Anadolu Agency correspondents on the night of July 15 was also visited.

Malta

A commemoration ceremony was held in honour of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day" at the historical Turkish Martyrs' Memorial in Malta.

The ceremony at the Turkish Martyrs' Memorial in the Marsa neighbourhood near the capital Valletta was attended by Fethi Etem, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Turkish Embassy in Valletta, embassy officials, and citizens.

After Chargé d'Affaires a.i. Etem laid a wreath at the monument, a minute of silence was observed in memory of martyrs, followed by the singing of the Turkish National Anthem.

Speaking at the commemoration ceremony, Etem stated that they commemorate with respect and gratitude all martyrs, especially those who lost their lives defending democracy 9 years ago today.

Prayers were offered at the ceremony for all martyrs.

Etem and the accompanying delegation subsequently placed red carnations on each of the martyrs' graves.

In addition, during the ceremony, "The Name of Victory: Türkiye, July 15 Photos Exhibition" was also opened to visitors in the martyrdom courtyard.

Egypt

The Embassy of Türkiye in Cairo organised a commemoration programme on the occasion of the "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

As part of the ceremony held at the embassy residence, the embassy staff first visited the Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery in Cairo, and a moment of silence was observed in memory of the 4,500 Turks who were martyred on the Palestinian Front during World War I and the Turkish citizens who were martyred on July 15.

On July 15, Democracy and National Unity Day, which this year had the theme "The Name of Victory: Türkiye," the Turkish and Egyptian national anthems were played after a moment of silence in memory of the July 15 martyrs.

Following the recitation of the Holy Quran and prayers in memory of the July 15 martyrs, the martyrdom book was signed by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen.

The ceremony featured a video screening and a photo exhibition on July 15 prepared by the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye.

Approximately 250 guests attended the ceremony, including ambassadors residing in Cairo from various countries such as Azerbaijan, Albania, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Iraq, Qatar, Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Slovenia, Chile, Singapore, Venezuela, Vietnam, Tanzania, the Head of the Office for the Protection of Interests of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Syrian chargé d'affaires, as well as representatives from Egyptian society, prominent senators and academics, Egyptian press members, and Turkish business people and citizens.

Nigeria

A commemorative event was held in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. At the event organised by the Turkish Embassy in Abuja, a moment of silence was observed for former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13.

The event began with a moment of silence in honour of the cherished memory of the heroes martyred in Türkiye’s struggle for democracy.

Following the recitation of the Turkish and Nigerian national anthems, the Holy Quran was recited, and prayers were offered for the martyrs.

In his speech here, the Turkish Ambassador to Abuja, Mehmet Poroy, highlighted the significance of July 15 in Türkiye's history of democracy and underlined that the Turkish nation had upheld democracy.

Mawlid will be recited for martyrs

The Turkish Embassy is organising a mawlid and commemoration programme for the martyrs this evening at Hz. Ebubekir Mosque within the scope of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day events.

Uzbekistan

A commemoration ceremony was held in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The ceremony held at the Turkish Embassy in Tashkent was attended by Ambassador Ufuk Ulutaş, Turkish businesspeople in the country, embassy staff, and Uzbek journalists.

The programme started with a moment of silence for the July 15 martyrs and the reading of the National Anthem, followed by a recitation of the Holy Quran and prayers.

Delivering a speech at the event, Ambassador Ulutaş stated that they gathered on the occasion of the 9th anniversary of thwarting the July 15 coup attempt under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the defeat of the malicious mindset and its apparatus behind it, saying, "The epic of July 15, an unprecedented resistance in world history, is the victory of the nation, the national will, and the millions who stood up for democracy; in other words, the victory of Türkiye."

Pakistan

Türkiye's Embassy in Islamabad hosted a commemoration ceremony for July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The event was attended by Türkiye's Ambassador to Islamabad İrfan Neziroğlu, Pakistan's Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, embassy staff, representatives of Turkish institutions, Turkish businesspeople, and numerous guests.

The ceremony began with a minute of silence, followed by the Turkish National Anthem.

Speaking at the ceremony, Neziroğlu thanked the guests and said, "Nine years ago, on the night of July 15th, 2016, our country faced a treacherous coup attempt that aimed to overthrow our democratic institutions, constitutional order, and the will of the people. This night, which began in darkness, ended, praise God, with the Turkish people's unity, resistance, and unwavering determination. Citizens from all walks of life, young and old, men and women, took to the streets, armed only with their voices and a belief in democracy."

Neziroğlu emphasised that the martyrs of July 15 sacrificed their lives to protect Turkish sovereignty and continued:

"Today, we honour the memory of our 253 martyrs and wish them God's mercy. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the veterans who defended our democracy that night. Their sacrifices are a sacred legacy that brings us together no matter where we are in the world. July 15 reminds us that our greatest strength comes from our unity. Standing together in solidarity, we have overcome great challenges, and we will continue to do so."

Afforestation by TİKA in Islamabad

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) organised an afforestation event in Islamabad on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The event held by TİKA at Fatima Jinnah (F-9) Park in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, was attended by İrfan Neziroğlu, the Ambassador of Türkiye to Islamabad; Saliha Tuna, TİKA's Coordinator for Islamabad; Naeem Akbar Raja, the Federal Secretary for Law and Justice of Pakistan; Pakistani public officials; NGO representatives; members of Turkish institutions in Islamabad; and many Turkish citizens.

As part of the event marking July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, a total of 253 saplings were planted, one for each of the 253 martyrs who lost their lives during the 2016 coup attempt orchestrated by the Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO).

The event reinforced the bonds of friendship and brotherhood between Türkiye and Pakistan.

Romania

A commemoration event was organised in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, for July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The event, organised by the Turkish Embassy in Bucharest, began with a moment of silence in honour of the cherished memory of the heroes martyred in Türkiye’s struggle for democracy.

Following the national anthems of Türkiye and Romania, the martyrs were honoured with recitations of the Holy Quran and prayers.

In his speech, the Turkish Ambassador to Bucharest, Özgür Kıvanç Altan, highlighted the significance of July 15 in Türkiye’s democratic history and underscored the importance of the nation’s epic struggle waged in unity and solidarity.

As part of the event, an award ceremony was also held for the short film and documentary competition themed "July 15: Our Nation's Epic Through the Eyes of Youth", organised by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA). In the competition, aiming to convey this historical process experienced by Türkiye to younger generations, Ambassador Altan presented the awards to the winners.

The July 15-themed exhibition opened by the Yunus Emre Institute in Bucharest also garnered significant interest from the participants.

Russia

A commemoration programme was held in Moscow, the capital of Russia, on July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

Ambassador Tanju Bilgiç and the embassy staff attended the ceremony held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Moscow.

The programme commenced with a moment of silence for the July 15 martyrs and the performance of the National Anthem, followed by the screening of a video on the events that transpired on July 15.

In his speech, the Turkish Ambassador to Moscow, Bilgiç, recalled that 9 years ago, Türkiye was confronted with a bloody coup attempt orchestrated by the Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO) and stated:

"The vile terrorist attack targeting our people, democracy, national will, parliament, and all our national values was thwarted thanks to the spirit of unity and solidarity of our nation. Under the leadership of our President, the Turkish nation gave the necessary response to the traitors by resisting tanks, rifles, and bombs, even at the cost of their lives."

Mustafa Uluhan Baysal, the Counsellor for Interior Affairs at the Turkish Embassy in Moscow, stated that with the treacherous July 15 coup attempt, FETO launched a direct and open attack on the sovereignty rights of the Turkish people and Türkiye's values.

The ceremony ended with a prayer for the martyrs of July 15.

Senegal

The programme hosted by the Ambassador of Türkiye to Dakar, Nur Sağman, was attended by the representatives of Turkish institutions, Turkish residents in Senegal, and Senegalese guests.

Commencing with a moment of silence for the July 15 martyrs followed by the Turkish National Anthem, the programme featured the recitation of the Holy Quran and prayers led by the Counsellor for Social Affairs and Religious Services, Faruk Uslu.

In his address, Ambassador Sağman commemorated the martyrs who lost their lives during the coup attempt with gratitude and mercy, highlighting the significance of preserving unity and solidarity.

The programme, during which a movie about the coup attempt was screened, concluded with the serving of an assortment of delicacies.

Serbia

Speaking at the commemoration programme held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Belgrade, Ambassador İlhan Saygılı announced this year's theme, "The Name of Victory: Türkiye," and said, "We have gathered to commemorate so that the disaster from which our country narrowly escaped does not recur."

Saygılı stated that on the night of July 15 in Türkiye, there was an attempt to abolish democracy and added, "In a manner rarely, if ever, seen in the history of global democracy, millions of our citizens, regardless of their political views or ethnic identities, gathered in the squares at the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and stood up for their country."

Tunisia

Held under the auspices of the Embassy of Türkiye in Tunisia at the Yunus Emre Institute (YEI) located in the capital Tunis, the commemoration ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of Türkiye to Tunisia, Ahmet Misbah Demircan, YEI Tunisia Coordinator, Dr Ali İhsan Çevik, Embassy personnel, representatives of Turkish institutions in Tunisia, YEI students, and Turkish students receiving education in Tunisia.

In the programme, which continued with the recitation of the Holy Quran following the National Anthem and the observation of a minute of silence for the martyrs, Ambassador Demircan recounted the events of July 15.

Following the recitation of poems by students from Tunisia and Türkiye, Salih Uysal, the Vice Principal of Konya Imam Hatip High School, graciously led a khatm (completion) prayer in honour of the khatm (complete recitation) of the Holy Quran, which was undertaken by Turkish students visiting Tunisia for their Arabic language studies.

Jordan

Yunus Emre Enstitüsü (YEE) in Amman, the capital of Jordan, organised a commemoration event for July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The event, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Amman at the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre, was attended by Türkiye's Ambassador to Amman, Yakup Caymazoğlu, YEE Amman Coordinator Ensar Fırat, employees of Turkish missions in Jordan, Turkish citizens, and students.

A July 15 exhibition of photographs taken by Anadolu Agency (AA) was opened at the event, which also featured videos about July 15.

Speaking at the program, Ambassador Caymazoğlu reminded that on the night of July 15, 2016, an attack was made on Türkiye's democracy, national unity, and solidarity by the Fetullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO).

Greece

A commemoration ceremony was held in Athens, the capital of Greece, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

Türkiye's Ambassador to Athens Çağatay Erciyes hosted a commemoration ceremony at the Embassy, attended by Türkiye's Consul General in Athens-Piraeus Işıl Işık Civelik, Azerbaijan's Acting Chargé d'Affaires in Athens Gafgaz Aslansoy, Embassy staff, and representatives of Turkish institutions in Athens.

At the ceremony, which began with a minute of silence for the martyrs and the rendering of the National Anthem, Ambassador Erciyes stated, "Our country has been subjected to a treacherous terrorist attack. That night, FETÖ members attempted a treacherous coup targeting our constitutional order, our state, our democracy, and our independence. The brainwashed traitors did not hesitate to bomb the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, shoot at their fellow citizens, and crush them with tanks. However, with the call of our President, our nation took to the streets with people of all ages and stood against these scoundrels. Our patriotic soldiers and police officers did not let these traitors pass."

The July 15 commemoration ceremony, which included an exhibition of photographs of the struggle against the coup attempt, ended with the Fatiha Surah recited for the martyrs.

Permanent Mission of Türkiye to NATO

The Permanent Mission of Türkiye to NATO held a ceremony on the occasion of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.

The ceremony began with a minute of silence, followed by the Turkish National Anthem.

In his speech, Permanent Representative of Türkiye to NATO, Ambassador Basat Öztürk, reminded this year's theme for the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, "The Name of Victory: Türkiye," emphasising that the Turkish nation has a history full of victories and that the Republic of Türkiye is taking independent and hopeful steps towards the future with its institutions and people.

The ceremony ended after the civilian and military personnel serving at the Permanent Mission of Türkiye to NATO and the Turkish Military Delegation to NATO posed for a family photo.
