Head of Communications Duran’s statement on President Erdoğan’s meeting with Pope Leo XIV

Presidency’s Head of Communications, Burhanettin Duran, stated in a post on his NSosyal account that the messages of peace and justice delivered by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during his meeting with Pope Leo XIV, Head of the Vatican City State, resonated across both the Turkish–Islamic world and the Christian geography.

In his statement, Head of Communications Duran said:

“During President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with Pope Leo XIV, Head of the Vatican City State, who is paying an official visit to our country, Türkiye–Vatican relations and matters concerning the common conscience of humanity, particularly Palestine, as well as current regional and global developments, were addressed.

This meeting has become central not only to Türkiye–Vatican relations but also to the global pursuit of peace. As emphasised by our President, the fact that the messages conveyed from Türkiye reach both the Turkish–Islamic world and the Christian geography is of great significance in terms of strengthening hopes for peace across the world.”

Türkiye demonstrates the will to take an active responsibility for peace and justice, rather than remaining outside regional and global crises. Because keeping the spark of peace alive not only means stopping conflicts but also protecting the shared conscience of humanity. The support and contributions aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine War are one of the most concrete examples of this.

Our President’s remarks on the rising Islamophobia in the West once again highlighted how hate speech poisons societies and showed that this threat, which endangers humanity, has now reached a level that can no longer be ignored. Islamophobia and xenophobia benefit no one; on the contrary, they cause harm. This mindset is a dangerous rupture targeting the culture of coexistence in societies. Today, in a world where respect for values prevails, the louder the voice of peace sounds, the more quickly hope will blossom for humanity.

Our President, in his remarks, drew attention to the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza and emphasised that we regard our solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people as a humanitarian and moral responsibility.''
