Disinformation Bulletin on earthquake released

The bulletin indicated that the claim “The earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş were triggered by the 6,000-meter deep oil exploration well drilled by the US company”, which was posted on several social media accounts and made the headlines, was false, and noted the following:

“Within the borders of Kahramanmaraş province, a total of 4 exploration wells have been drilled, three by the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and one jointly by private companies. No oil and gas have been detected in these wells. There are no wells with a depth of 6,000 meters, as claimed, in the region. The diameter of oil exploration wells drilled has an average diameter of 24 cm, making it impossible for the claimed images to be associated with the oil wells. Moreover, the oil licenses partially encompassing the province of Kahramanmaraş are owned by a public institution and a local private company. The aforementioned wells have been sealed using internationally recognized methods so that they will not harm the environment or the people who live there in the future.”

The bulletin stated that the claims of “Some walls on the Turkish-Syrian border have collapsed, and gangs are entering Türkiye” shared on some social media accounts are false. It went on to note that there was no damage to the 837-kilometre modular concrete wall along the Syrian border, and the border security is under the control of the Turkish Armed Forces.

The said bulletin, which is drafted by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, Centre for Combating Disinformation, is published on a daily basis.
