“Fuat Sezgin’s Legacy: Building Bridges through Science Diplomacy” book launch held

The book "Fuat Sezgin’s Legacy: Building Bridges through Science Diplomacy", prepared for publication by the Directorate of Communications, was introduced at a special event.

The event, held at a hotel in Istanbul, began with a moment of silence and the Turkish National Anthem.

Participants included Presidency's Head of Communications Fahrettin Altun, the Board of Trustees Member of the Research Foundation for the History of Science in Islam (IBTAV) Necmeddin Bilal Erdoğan, Anadolu Agency Chairman of thr Board and Director General Serdar Karagöz, as well as academics, writers, and representatives from the intellectual community.

The event commemorated the 7th anniversary of the passing of Prof. Fuat Sezgin, one of Türkiye's leading scholars in the history of science in Islam. Panels were held focusing on Sezgin’s life and scholarly works.

The panel titled "Remembering Fuat Sezgin: His Life, Works, and Legacy" was moderated by the Rector of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University (FSMVU), Prof. Nevzat Şimşek. Speakers included the Rector of Kırıkkale Üniversite, Prof. Ersan Aslan, Prof. Şükrettin Güldütuna from Frankfurt University, and Mehmet Alparslan Çelebi, Executive Board Member of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD).

Another session titled "Transcending Borders through Science Diplomacy: Fuat Sezgin's Legacy of Islamic Science" was moderated by Coşkun Yılmaz, PhD, President of the Manuscripts Institution of Türkiye. Speakers included IRCICA Director General Prof. Mahmud Erol Kılıç, Director of FSMVU’s Fuat Sezgin Institute Nihal Fırat Özdemir, PhD, IBTAV Academic Board Member Zahide Özkan, PhD, and Hüseyin Şen, PhD, from the Qatar National Library.

As part of the event, two exhibitions were also opened: "The Heritage of Civilisation: Examples from the History of Islamic Science" and "A Life Dedicated to Science".
