“We will have the climate law approved by our Parliament in the coming period”

Addressing the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, President Erdoğan said: “We will have the climate law approved by our Parliament in the coming period. We have once again highlighted the importance we attach to the issue by announcing our candidacy to host the 31st UN Climate Change Summit.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed via video conference the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate.

Thanking U.S. President Joe Biden for keeping this important issue on the agenda and for inviting him to the forum, President Erdoğan took the occasion to express his gratitude for the U.S. support in the wake of the February 6 earthquakes in Türkiye.

Mentioning the Türkiye National Risk Shield model, initiated to make the country more resistant against disasters, President Erdoğan stated that earthquake victims will be handed over their homes in which they can reside in peace within a year.

“THE SOLUTION TO CLIMATE CHANGE IS THROUGH GLOBAL SOLIDARITY”

President Erdoğan said: “The solution to climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution, collectively known as the triple planet crisis, is through global solidarity. In this regard, we presented our updated National Contribution Declaration at the 27th UN Climate Change Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. We have doubled our emission reduction target for 2030 in line with our 2053 Net Zero Emission target. We will have the climate law approved by our Parliament in the coming period. We have once again highlighted the importance we attach to the issue by announcing our candidacy to host the 31st UN Climate Change Summit. We not only focus on reducing carbon emissions but also continue our works regarding other greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Accordingly, we will have prepared our National Strategy Document by 2024 for the gradual reduction of hydrofluorocarbon emissions.”

“WE CONTINUE OUR WORKS TOWARDS GREEN TRANSFORMATION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD, OUR COMMON HOME”

Pointing out that the Zero Waste Project, implemented under the auspices of First Lady Emine Erdoğan, was taken to a global scale with a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2022, President Erdoğan stressed that with this resolution, designed by Türkiye, March 30 was declared as the International Day of Zero Waste, and that an Advisory Board was set up under the chairmanship of Mrs. Erdoğan under the roof of the United Nations in a bid to raise awareness about the topic.

President Erdoğan added that Türkiye will host the 16th UN Biodiversity Conference in 2024 and will be the term chair of the Convention on Biodiversity for a period of two years.

“We also continue our works towards green transformation for the future of the world, our common home,” said the President, further stressing that Togg, Türkiye’s recently-introduced electric car, constitutes a part of the country’s green transformation endeavors.

“WE HAVE INCREASED THE SHARE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY CAPACITY IN OUR TOTAL INSTALLED POWER TO 55 PERCENT”

President Erdoğan continued his remarks as follows: “We have increased the share of renewable energy capacity in our total installed power to 55 percent. In this respect, we rank the 12th in the world and the 5th in Europe. We rank the 1st in installed geothermal power and the 2nd in installed hydroelectric power in Europe. We have prevented 90 million tons’ equivalent of greenhouse gas emission annually as a result of the steps we have taken in energy efficiency and renewable energy. We have announced our hydrogen technologies strategy and roadmap earlier this year. Türkiye will continue its efforts for the solution of all the environmental issues with an approach focused on sustainable development and green transformation.”
