Türkiye and Hungary sign natural gas export agreement

Under the terms of the agreement, Türkiye will export natural gas via pipeline to a non-bordering European country for the first time.

The two nations came to an agreement regarding the export of natural gas from Türkiye to Hungary.

In line with Türkiye's strategic objectives in the energy sector and its vision of becoming a natural gas hub, it was announced that BOTAŞ and MVM CEEnergy, a state-owned company in Hungary, had signed a historic natural gas export agreement.

According to the statement, Burhan Özcan, General Manager and Chairman of the Board of Directors of BOTAŞ Petroleum Pipeline Corporation, and Laszlo Fritsch, CEO of MVM CEEnergy, signed the historic agreement at a ceremony held yesterday in Hungary under the auspices of Alparslan Bayraktar, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, and Gábor Czepek, State Secretary for Public Administration of the Ministry of Energy of Hungary and Chairman of the Board of Directors of MVM CEEnergy.

The statement notes that natural gas deliveries from Türkiye to Hungary are expected to begin the following year, adding that the agreement also includes cooperation on the use of Türkiye's LNG infrastructure and the two countries' natural gas storage facilities within the framework of their shared interests.

According to the statement, "BOTAŞ, which is the assurance of our country's natural gas supply security, will also make an important contribution to Europe's energy supply security through this agreement, which is the first agreement on natural gas exports through pipelines to a European country that does not share a border with Türkiye."

In January, Türkiye also signed an agreement with Bulgaria to export 1.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually for 13 years.
