We note with serious concern the visual content and editorial framing used in the broadcast shared by CNN International, including the video published on its official social media accounts. The map featured in the broadcast, depicting “Kurdish-inhabited areas” covering parts of the Republic of Türkiye and neighboring countries, presents a misleading and reductive representation of the region.
Citizens of different identities and ethnic backgrounds have lived together across our country for generations, sharing the same social, political and civic life. Each of the 86 million citizens of Türkiye constitutes an integral part of the Republic of Türkiye and one of the country's fundamental social components. Such approaches, which target our unity, solidarity and fraternity through simplified and selective geographical depictions, distort this reality.
Equally important, Kurdish citizens of our country must not be conflated with any political or militant actors. Such conflations risk reinforcing narratives that misrepresent the social fabric of Türkiye and overlook the diverse and integrated character of the country’s population.
The language and narrative framing used in the video, together with the map itself, construct an artificial geopolitical interpretation that does not correspond to the realities on the ground and risks creating unnecessary tensions.
When reporting on sensitive regional issues, international media organizations are expected to exercise accuracy, contextual awareness, and editorial responsibility.
In this context, we expect CNN International to refrain from using such misleading maps or visual representations in its broadcasts and digital platforms and to demonstrate greater editorial diligence in future coverage.
Under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Türkiye will continue to uphold an understanding that regards our diversity as a source of strength and further reinforces our unity and solidarity, while resolutely implementing policies that prioritize the peace and prosperity of all our citizens.
