President Erdoğan visits replica of Göbeklitepe obelisk on exhibit at UN headquarters

After addressing the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited the replica of the obelisks in Göbeklitepe, the 12 thousand-year-old heritage of Anatolia, exhibited on the grounds of the United Nations (UN) headquarters.

As part of a joint effort by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 1/2 reduced copy of the T-shaped P18 obelisk, representing Göbeklitepe, which was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018, began to be exhibited on the grounds of UN headquarters.

During his visit, President Erdoğan was accompanied by Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, AK Party Deputy Chairman Binali Yıldırım, President of 75th session of UN General Assembly Volkan Bozkır, Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın and Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the UN Feridun Sinirlioğlu.

The replica of the obelisk became the second "ancient Anatolian" artefact on exhibit at the UN headquarters.

The UN will permanently host the replica of the obelisks in Göbeklitepe.

The replica, like all the obelisks in Göbeklitepe, was carved out of limestone - known in the region as "Şanlıurfa stone"- over the course of around two months by Ahmet Demirtaş, an archaeologist and sculptor from Şanlıurfa, and his team.

President Erdoğan shared a post about the replica of the obelisk in Göbeklitepe, which has begun to be exhibited on the grounds of the United Nations (UN) headquarters.

In the post shared on his social media account, President Erdoğan said, "A replica of the obelisks in Göbeklitepe, which is located in Şanlıurfa and called the 'zero point of history', has begun to be exhibited on the grounds of the UN headquarters in New York. May it be auspicious for our country and Şanlıurfa."

President Erdoğan’s post also featured a photo taken during his visit to the obelisk replica.
