President Erdoğan sends video message to Organisation of Turkic States meeting

President Erdoğan: “The media, which is described as the 4th power in democracies, may become a manipulation instrument that distorts and conceals the truth in the hands of certain powers, certain global companies, and malicious circles.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sent a video message to the Fourth Meeting of the Ministers and High Officials in Charge of Media and Information of the Organisation of Turkic States held in İstanbul and hosted by the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications.

Expressing his pleasure at hosting the guests in Istanbul, the metropolis of culture, history, nature and civilisations, President Erdoğan said: “I hope that the meetings and the consultations you held will be auspicious for our countries. I would like to express my gratitude in advance to everyone whose ideas, evaluations and exchanges will enrich the meeting. Your meeting today will contribute to the further development of our collaboration on media, one of the most misused and ignored areas. As you all know, we, as the Turkic world, pushed our solidarity to the next level by establishing the Organisation of Turkic States last year. Thus, we laid the foundation for a new era in many fields including politics, education, economy and security cooperation.”

Media may become a manipulation instrument in the hands of certain powers”

Expressing that they should extend solidarity to different fields and further strengthen it in the light of the Turkic World 2040 Vision Document, President Erdoğan stated:

“Media and communication issues and the fight against social media and disinformation are of vital importance in terms of ensuring our political and social survival. The rush of lies and slander we witnessed during the Karabakh War served as a reminder of the importance of this issue and demonstrated how indispensable it is for us to join forces. The war was not fought only on the ground, but a fierce struggle was waged for 44 days on many platforms, from printed and visual media to social media. We have all come to realise this truth in the wake of our own painful experiences. “The media, which is described as the 4th power in democracies, may become a manipulation instrument that distorts and conceals the truth in the hands of certain powers, certain global companies, and malicious circles.”

President Erdoğan remarked in his video message:

“Digital fascism has become a threat that hinders the right of billions of people to receive accurate and unbiased news. In particular, social media platforms, where there is no self-control, inspection, rule, or ethical values, pose serious risks for all societies. Searching for, reaching, and defending the truth has taken on greater importance in these platforms where lies, defamation and distortion are commonplace. In this regard, I see communication as an issue of strategic importance, at least as important as defence, security, and health. Such meetings give me hope that we can further our cooperation on combatting disinformation, information security, national information technologies, and movies and series projects that prioritise the common culture.”

Wishing the Meeting of the Ministers and High Officials in Charge of Media and Information of the Organisation of Turkic States to be auspicious, President Erdoğan said, “I wish happiness, prosperity and well-being to all our brothers and sisters in the Turkic world, and I extend my heartfelt feelings and respect to you all.”
