President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, "Coup is a crime against humanity. I have gone through February 28; I am aware of February 28".
President Erdoğan shared a video message on his Twitter account on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the February 28 coup, which is referred to as the "postmodern coup" in Turkish political history.
President Erdoğan noted the following in his message:
"I was the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality during the February 28 coup. Because of a poem I recited, I was imprisoned unlawfully in an effort to put an end to my political career. I currently serve as the first President of Türkiye, having been elected by the Turkish people. Against all challenges, I serve my glorious nation with honour. Coup is a crime against humanity. I have gone through February 28; I am aware of February 28."
