Presidency’s Directorate of Communications holds meeting on “Russia-Ukraine war” as part of Doha Forum

At the roundtable meeting titled “From Regional to Global: Impacts of the War in Ukraine on the Middle East”, organised by the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications as part of the Doha Forum, experts discussed the war’s ramifications for the Middle East.

The meeting, held as part of the forum held in Doha, Qatar’s capital, under the theme, “Diplomacy, Dialogue, Diversity” this year, covered topics such as the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on international political architecture, the geopolitical ramifications of the crisis for the Middle East, and Türkiye’s mediation efforts.

Research Director at the SETA Foundation in Washington DC Assoc Prof Kılıç Buğra Kanat, Faculty Member at Istanbul Medipol University, Department of Political Science Assoc Prof Hüseyin Alptekin, Faculty Member at Istanbul Medeniyet University, Department of Political Science and Public Administration Assoc Prof Veysel Kurt, Head of the Public Diplomacy Department of the Directorate of Communications Oğuz Güner (PhD), Senior Correspondent for Al Jazeera English Jamal Elshayyal and Research Assistant Professor at Qatar University, Ibn Khaldon Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences Ali Bakır (PhD) spoke at the meeting which was moderated by Editor-in-Chief of Doha News’ Features, Video and Planning Department Razan Saffour. The meeting was also attended by Presidency’s Deputy Director of Communications Çağatay Özdemir (PhD), International Relations Specialist Abdullah Erboğa (PhD), investigative journalist Ali Zalat from Al Jazeera, Maysa Ebu Hilal, Conflict Resolution Specialist at Doha Institute, and Khadijah Elshayyal, Associate Fellow at Edinburgh University.

In the meeting, where the Russia-Ukraine war, which poses a threat not only to the Black Sea Basin but also to international peace and security, was discussed in-depth, it was emphasised that it is imperative for the states in the region to collaborate against the threats and challenges they face as a result of the Russia-Ukraine War’s repercussions on the Middle East, and to highlight diplomacy and dialogue in the resolution of the crisis was necessary.

Additionally, as part of the Doha Forum, Deputy Director of Communications Çağatay Özdemir (PhD) and Qatar International Media Director Sheikh Thamer Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani (PhD) met and held talks on cooperation in the media and communication fields of the two countries.

During the meeting, issues such as joint public diplomacy efforts between Qatar and Türkiye, the fight against disinformation, and potential areas of collaboration were discussed, and it was stressed that acting in cooperation on international platforms amid global and regional crises is essential.
