Presidency’s Communications Director Prof. Altun: “The decision of the Supreme Election Council should be seen as an effort to enable the election results to correctly reflect the national will”

Presidency’s Communications Director Prof. Fahrettin Altun made a statement to the AP News Agency about the decision of the Supreme Election Council (YSK) to renew the election of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

Noting that he welcomed the decision regarding the renewal of the elections in Istanbul, Altun said: "The decision occurred due to the application made by the AK Party as a result of the systematic falsification of voter registration, violations of the laws regarding the establishment of balloting boards and corruption in the vote counting."

Fahrettin Altun added:

"The decision of the Supreme Election Council should be seen as an effort to enable the election results to correctly reflect the national will. The decision given within this framework is a victory of our democracy. In addition, we completely believe that our justice system will hold accountable all individuals and organizations that violate our election laws during this process.

All parties should take the necessary measures to ensure that similar problems do not happen on June 23rd elections. Whatever the result, elections must be held according to our laws and procedure. Failure to comply with these rules will raise questions about the legitimacy of the elected and the foundations of our democracy will be weakened. The Republic of Turkey, which has been holding free and fair elections for 70 years, will complete the following process in a way that is transparent, licit and regular.”
