July 15 commemoration events abroad

On the 8th anniversary of July 15, Democracy and National Unity Day, commemorative events have been organised in many countries.

USA

The Embassy of Türkiye in Washington organised a commemoration ceremony in the US capital to mark the eighth anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt of July 15.

The commemoration ceremony was attended by the Turkish Ambassador to Washington, Sedat Önal, diplomats, representatives of foreign missions and civil society, and citizens from the Turkish-American community.

During the ceremony, which commenced with a moment of silence in honour of the July 15 martyrs, the Turkish National Anthem, and a Quran recitation, Ambassador Önal stated that the Turkish nation successfully overcame one of the most significant challenges in its history and passed a significant test of democracy eight years ago.

Video messages from Congressman Pete Sessions of Texas and Congressman Jack Bergman of Michigan were broadcast during the commemoration.

In his message, Sessions said he will continue to work to strengthen the relationship between the US and Türkiye, while Bergman said that "the Turkish people, with their rich history, resistance, and perseverance, stood strong against the coup attempt."

"As we commemorate this anniversary, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Turkish people who stood up for democracy," Bergman added.

Meskhetian (Ahiska) Turks living in the US state of Ohio commemorate martyrs of July 15

Meskhetian Turks living in the US state of Ohio commemorated with prayers those who were martyred in the coup attempt perpetrated by members of the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO) on July 15, 2016.

In the commemoration event held at the Ahiska Turkish American Community Centre (ATACC), the Holy Quran was recited and prayers were offered for the martyrs.

The commemorative programme included recitals of poems on the themes of "martyr," "homeland," and "July 15," as well as a screening of a documentary on July 15.

The president of ATACC, Islom Shakhbandarov, stated that they gathered to commemorate July 15 and pray for those who were martyred in the coup attempt.

"On the anniversary of the treacherous attempt, we came together with our children and friends to commemorate our martyrs and condemn the traitors," Shakhbandarov stated. Additionally, he underscored that they, as a community, adhere to the truth and the facts.

Palestine

In Nablus, a city in the occupied West Bank, the July 15 Children's Cultural Centre was inaugurated under the sponsorship of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

Nablus Governor Ghassan Daglas, Nablus Mayor Dr Husam Shakhshir, Nablus Mufti Ahmed Shubash, Nablus Provincial Health Director Ramiz Duwekat, Palestine Yunus Emre Institute Director Cengiz Eroğlu, TIKA's Coordinator for Palestine Orhan Aydın, Turkish graduates, and officials from Nablus Chamber of Commerce and Cultural Centre attended the opening ceremony of the hall named "Nablus July 15 Children's Cultural Centre" to honour the memory of those who were martyred in the coup attempt of the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO) on July 15.

Addressing the audience following the recitation of prayers honouring the martyrs of July 15 and Palestine and the playing of national anthems, Nablus Governor Ghassan Daglas noted that his grandfather, Bekir Abu Bakr, lost his life serving in the Ottoman ranks in Diyarbakır during World War I and highlighted that Türkiye and Palestine shared a common future and numerous historical values, while also expressing his gratitude to Türkiye and TIKA for their support of Palestine.

The event further featured a movie display on July 15.

Japan

The Turkish Embassy in Tokyo organised an event on "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

Turkish public and civil society representatives attended the programme held at the Ertuğrul Hall on the Tokyo Mosque and Cultural Centre campus of the Presidency of Religious Affairs.

Raşit Alas, the Embassy's Social Affairs Counsellor and former Sermon Imam of the Tokyo Mosque, recited the Holy Quran during the programme, which began with a moment of silence and the National Anthem.

In his speech, Türkiye's Ambassador to Tokyo Korkut Güngen described July 15 as "the nation's response with one heart" to the coup attempt by the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO).

Noting that Turkish citizens demonstrated "an unprecedented participation at the ballot box in the world" in every election period, Güngen stated that citizens "proved their care for democracy on the night of July 15, when they braved tanks and bullets."

Afghanistan

On the occasion of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day," a commemoration ceremony was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Kabul, Afghanistan, for those who lost their lives while resisting the treacherous coup attempt orchestrated by the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO). The ceremony at the Embassy in Kabul was attended by embassy staff as well as representatives of Turkish institutions operating in Afghanistan. During the ceremony, prayers were recited for the martyrs following a moment of silence for the July 15 martyrs and the National Anthem. In addition, those who resisted the coup attempt were once again commemorated with a photo exhibition on "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

Albania

Under the auspices of Embassy of Türkiye in Tirana, a commemoration ceremony was hosted in honour of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

The ceremony held at the July 15 Democracy Martyrs' Monument in the Great Lake Park in Tirana, the capital of Albania, was attended by Ambassador of Türkiye to Tirana Tayyar Kağan Atay, representatives of Turkish institutions and organisations in the country, as well as Turkish and Albanian citizens and guests.

In his speech, Ambassador Atay reiterated that the Turkish nation wrote an epic of democracy by safeguarding its constitutional order, parliament, and legitimate government through its honourable resistance, resulting in 252 martyrs and thousands of veterans.

Austria

A commemoration event was held at the Türkiye's Embassy in Vienna on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. The event was attended by Türkiye's Ambassador to Vienna Ozan Ceyhun, Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the United Nations (UN) Vienna Office Ambassador Levent Eler, Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Ambassador Hatun Demirer, as well as other guests. Speaking at the event, which commenced with a moment of silence and the National Anthem, Ambassador Ceyhun stated that they gathered at this place on the occasion of eighth anniversary of the July 15 treacherous coup attempt to mark the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day and to commemorate the martyrs and heroic veterans who sacrificed their lives to protect national values. The event ended after the recitation of Holy Quran and prayers.

Azerbaijan

A conference on "Commemoration of July 15 Martyrs, Democracy and National Unity Day" was held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Türkiye's Ambassador to Baku Cahit Bağcı, Embassy counselors, representatives of Turkish institutions and organisations in Baku, Azerbaijani state officials and guests attended the event held at the Turkic World of Economics Faculty of Azerbaijan State University of Economics.
The event, moderated by Brigadier General İlhan Şen, Interior Counselor of the Baku Embassy, started with a moment of silence for the martyrs. Speaking at the event where the Turkish National Anthem and Azerbaijani National Anthem were sung, Ambassador Bağcı commemorated the heroic martyrs with mercy and gratitude.

Western Balkans

Commemoration events were held in the Western Balkan countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia as part of the "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

The programme at the Embassy of Türkiye in Sarajevo started with a moment of silence, followed by the National Anthem and prayers for the martyrs.

Türkiye's Ambassador to Sarajevo Sadık Babür Girgin said in his speech that the coup attempt orchestrated by the members of the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO) was thwarted by the resistance and that the nation that defended democracy achieved victory.

In Serbia, the July 15 Translation and Digitalisation Workshop, built by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) at the Dositej Obradovic Library in the city of Yeni Pazar (Novi Pazar) in the Sancak (Sandžak) Region, where Muslims live in the majority, was inaugurated.

Türkiye's Ambassador to Belgrade Hami Aksoy said in his speech that they would never forget the people of Yeni Pazar's solidarity with them during the coup attempt.

The commemoration programme for July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day in Montenegro was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Podgorica.

After the minute of silence and the Turkish National Anthem, Counsellor for Religious Services of the Embassy in Podgorica Bahattin Akbaş prayed for the martyrs and recited the Holy Quran.

Türkiye's Ambassador to Podgorica Barış Kalkavan said that on the night of July 15, 2016, the Turkish nation heroically defended its democracy, national will, and moral values, risking their lives for their homeland and nation.

A commemoration event took place at Türkiye's Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia, attended by embassy staff and representatives from Turkish institutions and organisations.

After a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs, the National Anthem was sang.

The programme also featured a video display and a photo exhibition on the events that took place during the coup attempt by FETO on July 15, 2016.

July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day message from the Turkish people in Western Thrace

In their messages issued on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, the Turkish minority institutions in Western Thrace condemned the treacherous coup attempt in 2016 and remembered the martyrs with mercy.

Belgium

A commemoration programme was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Brussels on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. The programme, hosted by Türkiye's Ambassador to Brussels Bekir Uysal, began with a minute of silence. After the short film showing the events of July 15, 2016, the religious official of Brussels Fatih Mosque Ahmet Elmacı recited a prayer for the martyrs.

In his speech, Ambassador Uysal stated, "Thanks to the united resolve of our people and our state under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the bravery of those who risked their lives to resist, the plotters of this treacherous attack on our democracy failed."

Czechia

Former President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus, who participated in the event organised on the occasion of the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day in the Czechia's capital, Prague, said that he was pleased to be on the same side with those who successfully defended democracy and political institutions in Türkiye in 2016 and resolutely rejected attempts to destabilise the country. Klaus attended the event titled "July 15: The Victory of the Nation: An Unprecedented Civil Democracy Struggle" organised by Türkiye's Embassy in Prague.

Klaus said, "It is difficult to assess a country from the outside, but I trust my analytical assessments based on my basic intuition and my extensive political experience. I am therefore pleased to be on the same side with those who successfully defended democracy and political institutions in Türkiye and resolutely rejected attempts to destabilise the country eight years ago."

China

A commemoration ceremony was held in Beijing, the capital of China, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. A significant number of guests attended the commemoration ceremony hosted by Türkiye's Ambassador to Beijing İsmail Hakkı Musa, at the embassy building. The ceremony began with a minute of silence for those who lost their lives in the coup attempt on July 15, 2016 and the National Anthem.

In his speech, Ambassador Musa referred to the stance against the coup attempt, during which 252 people were martyred and more than 2 thousand people became veterans, as an "unprecedented epic." During the ceremony, the video titled "Time of Dawn," created by the Presidency's Directorate of Communication, was displayed. Guests participating in the programme visited the exhibition of photographs taken during the coup attempt.

Georgia

A programme was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Tbilisi on the occasion of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."
Undersecretary of Türkiye's Embassy in Tbilisi Kazım Kartal, embassy officials, representatives of Turkish institutions in Georgia and Turkish citizens attended the ceremony held on the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the July 15 treacherous coup attempt.

Speaking at the programme, which started with a moment of silence for the martyrs and the singing of the National Anthem, Kartal recalled what happened in Türkiye 8 years ago on July 15 and said, "Eight years ago today, the treacherous coup attempt orchestrated by the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO) and threatening the independence of our state was foiled under the leadership of our President, thanks to our august nation and heroic security forces."

A short film depicting the events of the night of July 15, 2016 was shown and prayers were said for the martyrs. During the ceremony, a presentation was made regarding the FETO organisation.

Iraq

The Embassy of Türkiye in Baghdad held a commemoration event at the Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery in Baghdad to mark July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. In his remarks, Türkiye's Ambassador to Baghdad Anıl Bora İnan stated that the Republic's accomplishments were the focus of the attack on the night of July 15. Following the event, Ambassador İnan placed a wreath at the Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery and offered prayers for the martyrs. The Turkish Embassy staff and representatives of the Iraqi Turkmen community in Baghdad were present at the event commemorating July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

In addition, on the occasion of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day," the Consulate General of Türkiye in Erbil organised a commemorative event for the martyrs. The event was attended by Turkish Consul General Erman Topçu, Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) Minister of State for Minority and Religious Affairs, Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITF) Executive Committee Member Aydın Maruf, ITF Chairman Hasan Turan, representatives of Turkish institutions and companies in Erbil, and many citizens. The event began with a minute of silence for the July 15 martyrs and the National Anthem, followed by the recitation of the Holy Quran. During the event, an exhibition of photographs taken by Anadolu Agency correspondents on the night of July 15 was also visited.

Sweden

Those who lost their lives during the coup attempt of the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO) were honoured in the event held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Stockholm on "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day." The commemoration event, hosted by First Undersecretary of the Embassy of Türkiye in Stockholm Çınar Ergin attracted many diplomats and members of Turkish civil society organisations. A minute of silence was observed in memory of the July 15 martyrs, followed by the National Anthem.

During the event, İhsan Çakmak, a member of the Rinkeby Mosque of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, recited the Holy Quran and prayed for the martyrs, and a video prepared by the Directorate of Communications regarding the night of July 15 was displayed.

Switzerland

A commemoration programme on "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day" was organised in Bern, Switzerland's capital, on the 8th anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt.

The commemoration ceremony held at the Turkish Embassy in Bern was attended by Ambassador Emine Ece Özbayoğlu Acarsoy, Turkish Consul General in Zurich Hasan Emre Uygun, diplomats, representatives from civil society, and members of the Turkish community residing in Switzerland.

Speaking at the July 15 programme, which started with a moment of silence for the martyrs and the National Anthem, Ambassador Acarsoy said, "As a country, we are still united as one, eight years after the night of July 15, when 252 of our brothers were martyred, more than 2,000 of our citizens were injured, and our nation declared to the entire world that it was the sole owner of this state and country at the cost of its lives, and that its free will would never be shackled."

The programme featured videos and visuals prepared by our Directorate for this year's July 15 commemoration programmes. 

The programme, which ended with Necip Karakaya's prayer for the martyrs, was attended by Murat Şahin, Chairman of UID Switzerland, as well as many representatives from the heads of associations and citizens.

Cameroon

An event commemorating July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day was organised by the Embassy of Türkiye in the capital of Cameroon, Yaounde.

The ceremony held at the residence of the Turkish Embassy was attended by Ambassador Volkan Işıkçı, Cameroonian Minister of Defence Joseph Beti Assomo, Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development Alamine Ousmane Mey, Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth Mbayu Félix, Secretary General of the Ministry of External Relations Oumarou Chinmoun, as well as representatives of official Turkish institutions.

Ambassador Işıkçı delivered a speech during the ceremony, which began with a moment of silence for the martyrs and the National Anthem.

Following the speeches, the Holy Quran was recited, and prayers were said for the martyrs.

At the end of the ceremony, the participants visited a photo exhibition featuring images from the night of July 15.

Kyrgyzstan

A "15 July Democracy and National Unity Day" programme was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan's capital, near the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Monument in Atatürk Park. The programme was attended by the members of the Turkish Embassy in Bishkek, the Rectorate of Kyrgyzstan-Türkiye Manas University, the Bishkek Programme Coordinatorship of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), and officials from the Turkish Red Crescent Society, and Kyrgyz-Turkish Friendship State Hospital, as well as the management of Kyrgyzstan's Association of Meskhetian Turks and citizens.

After a minute of silence followed by the National Anthem, Ambassador of Türkiye to Bishkek Doğan stated that they were gathered here today to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt on July 15. Pointing out that the fight against FETO is not limited to Türkiye's borders, Ambassador Doğan said, "Thanks to our increasing bilateral cooperation in the fight against FETO, FETO and its supporters are no longer able to shelter in the places they knew as safe harbours in the past."

Kosovo 

The Balkan country of Kosovo held a commemoration ceremony for July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. The ceremony was hosted by the Ambassador of Türkiye to Pristina, Sabri Tunç Angılı, at the Embassy Residence. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Albin Kurti of Kosovo, Kosovo Democratic Turkish Party (KDTP) Chairman and Regional Development Minister Fikrim Damka, KDTP MPs Fidan Brina Jılta and Enis Kervan, Commander of NATO's Peace Force in Kosovo (KFOR), Major General Özkan Ulutaş, as well as ministers, MPs, mayors and ambassadors, representatives of Turkish and local institutions and organisations in the country.

In his address, Prime Minister Kurti of Kosovo stated that the people of Kosovo stood alongside the people of Türkiye on the night of July 15, 2016. Kurti said that the peoples of Kosovo and Türkiye were friends and that the two countries were partners and allies, and added, ''Distinguished Ambassador Mr Sabri Tunç Angılı, I would like to convey my nation's and my own respect to the July 15 martyrs and their families, as well as to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Turkish people as a whole through you.'' Furthermore, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, a variety of events will take place throughout the day in many Kosovo cities.

North Macedonia

A commemoration ceremony was held in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day. The programme began with a minute of silence, followed by the Turkish National Anthem. During his remarks, Türkiye's Ambassador to Skopje Fatih Ulusoy recalled that eight years had passed since the Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation's (FETO) treacherous coup attempt, and he pointed out that FETO members had infiltrated the Turkish Armed Forces with the intention of seizing control of state institutions. Ulusoy said that the coup attempt on July 15 was thwarted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Turkish people, and the security forces because of their unwavering determination. During the programme, Selah and the Holy Quran were recited, and prayers were offered.

Nigeria

A commemoration programme on "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day" was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Abuja on the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the July 15 treacherous coup attempt.

Among those in attendance at the commemoration ceremony were Türkiye's Ambassador to Abuja Hidayet Bayraktar, representatives of Turkish institutions in Nigeria, Turkish businesspeople, and Turkish and Nigerian citizens.

In the programme, which started with a moment of silence and the Turkish National Anthem, the Holy Quran was recited and prayers were offered for the martyrs.

In his address, Ambassador Bayraktar stated that today marks one of the most significant turning points in Türkiye's history, the 8th anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

TRNC

The Embassy of Türkiye in Lefkosa organised a ceremony for July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day at the TRNC Directorate General for Police (PGM) Special Operation Department in Girne.

The ceremony was attended by President Ersin Tatar of the TRNC, Türkiye's Ambassador to Lefkosa Metin Feyzioğlu, Security Forces Commander Major General Osman Aytaç, Counsellor Özer Korkmaz, and military and government servants.

The ceremony began with a minute of silence, the Turkish National Anthem, and the hoisting of the flags, which were followed by the reading of the Holy Quran and prayers for the July 15 martyrs.

Following the speeches in the programme, the names of the special operations police officers who were martyred on July 15, 2016, at the EGM Gölbaşı Campus in Ankara were read out by Türkiye's Ambassador to Lefkosa Feyzioğlu. The officers of the TRNC Directorate General for Police (PGM) Special Operations Department responded, "Here."

''Türkiye rose from July 15 stronger''

Speaking at the programme, President Tatar of the TRNC wished mercy for the martyrs of July 15 and stated, "We followed the treacherous coup attempt with concern in the TRNC, and Türkiye rose from July 15 stronger. And we are pleased that Türkiye rose from this process stronger.''

Malta

The Embassy of Türkiye in Valletta held a commemoration event at the Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery in Malta to mark July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

Türkiye's Ambassador to Valletta Erdeniz Şen, embassy officials, civilians, and representatives of foreign missions attended the event held at the Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery in the Marsa neighbourhood in the capital Valletta, Malta.

After Ambassador Şen laid a wreath at the monument, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the July 15 martyrs, followed by the National Anthem.

During the ceremony, prayers were offered for all martyrs, with a particular emphasis on those who lost their lives on July 15.

Red carnations were subsequently placed on the graves of the martyrs by Ambassador Şen and his entourage.

An exhibition on July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, consisting of visuals prepared by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, will also be opened at the Embassy of Türkiye in Valletta.

Pakistan

A commemoration ceremony was held in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

A significant number of guests attended the commemoration ceremony hosted by Türkiye's Ambassador to Islamabad Mehmet Paçacı, at the Embassy.

The event started with the national anthems of Türkiye and Pakistan and continued with the recitation of the Holy Quran.

Romania

The capital of Romania, Bucharest, hosted a commemoration event to mark July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

Representatives of Turkish non-governmental organisations in Romania, members of the Embassy and its affiliated organisations, and representatives of cognates attended the event hosted by Türkiye's Ambassador to Bucharest, Özgür Kıvanç Altan, at the embassy residence.

An exhibition of photographs captured by Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondents on the night of July 15, 2016, the night of the coup attempt, was inaugurated as part of the event.

The Holy Quran was read, and prayers were offered for the martyrs.

Russia

A commemoration ceremony was held in Moscow, the capital of Russia, on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

A commemoration programme on "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day" was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Moscow on the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the July 15 treacherous coup attempt.

Turkish Ambassador to Moscow Tanju Bilgiç, Embassy officials, representatives of Turkish institutions and organizations and Turkish citizens attended the ceremony.

Speaking at the program, which started with a moment of silence for the July 15 martyrs followed by the National Anthem, Ambassador Bilgiç stated that the Republic of Türkiye experienced one of the darkest days of its history on July 15, 2016.

Tunisia

A commemoration programme was held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Tunisia on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.
The ceremony, which was held at the Embassy in the capital Tunis with the participation of representatives of Turkish institutions and employees, started with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of July 15.

During the ceremony, which continued with the Turkish National Anthem, students of the Tunisia International Maarif School under the Turkish Maarif Foundation (TMV) recited the Holy Quran for the martyrs and then performed Arif Nihat Asya's poem "Flag."

Speaking at the ceremony, Turkish Ambassador to Tunisia Ahmet Misbah Demircan said that the July 15 coup attempt by the the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO)was defeated under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, thanks to the august Turkish nation and heroic security forces.

Greece

Under the auspices of Embassy of Türkiye in Athens, a commemoration ceremony was hosted in honour of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."

The ceremony held at the Embassy of Türkiye in Athens was hosted by Çağatay Erciyes, Ambassador of Türkiye to Athens.

Arif Mammadov, the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Athens, was present at the ceremony, which was also attended by representatives of Turkish official institutions as well as staff from the embassy and consulate.

The ceremony began with a minute of silence, followed by the Turkish National Anthem.

Following this, Ambassador Erciyes delivered a speech that underscored the significance of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day in the context of the country's democracy.

Permanent Mission of Türkiye to NATO

Under the auspices of Permanent Mission of Türkiye to NATO in Brussels, a commemoration ceremony was hosted in honour of "July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."
