The Directorate of Communications and Gaziantep Islamic Science and Technology University organised a panel titled "In the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Digital Media and Cyber Security" in Gaziantep.
During the panel held in the university's conference hall, Aslan Değirmenci, Digital Media Coordinator of the Directorate of Communications, stated that digital media has a significant place in Türkiye.
Değirmenci stated that many studies have been conducted on artificial intelligence and cyber security, and added:
"Internet penetration in Türkiye has reached 95%. There are 5 billion social media users worldwide. Four out of every five adults are currently using social media. This data demonstrates the importance of digital media. Although social media users use it for culture and entertainment, our research shows that 40% of social media users use it for information. Social media platforms have turned into a source of information."
The most significant concerns, according to Değirmenci, who explained the risks of social media use, are disinformation and manipulation.
Erol Tekmen, Member of the Court of Cassation, stated that one of the most essential areas in the country is digital media and cyber security.
"Perception, manipulation, information pollution and similar things on social media can become the number one agenda item in our country and in the world," Tekmen said, adding that social media platforms are actively used in Türkiye.
The average daily internet usage in Türkiye is 7.5 hours, according to Burak Doğan, a writer for the Yenişafak Newspaper.
Doğan stated that people spend 2 hours and 36 minutes of this time on social media, adding, "Everything shared on social media becomes a topic of discussion. However, especially the Directorate of Communications, has recently established a Centre for Combating Disinformation. Anadolu Agency has established the Fact Check Line. Because we are bombarded with disinformation."
Mahir Yüksel, a cyber security specialist, stated that the field of social media and cyber security is critical.
Prof. Şehmus Demir, Rector of Gaziantep Islamic Science and Technology University, emphasised the rapid development of technology and the significant revolution brought about by artificial intelligence.
Mücahit Taşkın, the Gaziantep Regional Director of the Directorate of Communications, stated that disinformation and manipulation can have significant impact on societies.
The panel was attended by vice rectors, academics, and students.
