Directorate of Communications’ “The Dilemma of the International System: Quo Vadis” Meeting

The Directorate of Communications organised a roundtable meeting titled "The Dilemma of the International System: Quo Vadis?" in Berlin prior to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's official visit to Germany.

Representatives from the German public sector, academia, think tanks, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as members of the German press, attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed strategies and opportunities for international cooperation with a sense of shared responsibility in the face of global peace and security challenges.

In addition to evaluating the devastation and humanitarian catastrophe brought about by the ineffectiveness of the international system in addressing contemporary global issues and conflicts, the meeting deliberated on reform strategies for the system.

Associate Professor Çağatay Özdemir, Presidency's Deputy Director of Communications, emphasised their focus on international crises during his speech at the meeting.

Özdemir noted that the international community could overcome the absence of resolution and conflict by establishing new mechanisms, placing particular emphasis on the shortcomings of the UN Security Council structure with regard to addressing international crises and conflicts.

Özdemir stated that the relations between Türkiye and Germany were of great importance in this respect as well.

Stating that disinformation and black propaganda activities were frequently carried out in traditional media and social media today, Özdemir said, "Our primary goal is to combat disinformation."

Pointing out that the fight against disinformation was a local and regional problem, Özdemir emphasised that there was a need for a global endeavour to establish and maintain international peace and stability.

Türkiye's Ambassador to Berlin Ahmet Başar Şen stated that the current international system established after the Second World War was inadequate for achieving global peace and stability and that the system falls short of resolving issues ranging from Ukraine to Palestine.

Emphasising that the diversification and increased complexity of international problems, ranging from terrorism to climate change and xenophobia to irregular migration, rendered the existing international system ineffective, Şen stated that the international system should be reformed to build a fairer world.

After the introductory remarks, attendees offered their perspectives and recommendations regarding the predicaments that the global system is currently facing. The meeting highlighted the need for close relations between Türkiye and Germany to address these challenges.
