Concerning the remarks made by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun noted, "Speaker Pelosi's remarks are made in the context of recent debates about peaceful transfer of power after the US elections in November. We must remind everyone that election results and people’s will are sacred to us.”
In a post he shared on his social media account, Altun made remarks regarding Pelosi's statement.
Addressing Pelosi, "When was the last time that there was no peaceful transfer of power in Turkey – with the exception of military coups?" asked Altun, adding, "And we remember who supported those attacks against Turkish democracy, too. In Speaker Pelosi's careless remarks, we see the reflection of pervasive misconceptions about Turkey among US politicians.”
Stating that Turkey has centuries of experience with modern constitutional systems and Turkish democracy is robust as ever because of this history, Altun noted, "Pelosi's statements are made in the context of recent debates about peaceful transfer of power after the US elections in November. We remind everyone that the election results and people’s will are sacred for us."
Noting that it’s against the US national interest and the spirit of an alliance to denigrate Turkey in an attempt to score domestic political points, Altun stated the following:
"We see this worrisome trend in US politicians to make Turkey part of domestic political struggles and part of an effort to attack President Trump’s good relations with President Erdoğan.
We call on US politicians and especially those in leadership positions to stop attacking and start engaging in a critical NATO ally like Turkey in a meaningful manner. This would be in the US national interest and the right thing to do for the future of our bilateral ties.
The extremely complex regional and strategic matters require thoughtful conversations and serious dialogue not off-the-cuff moments that have no relation to reality. We invite Speaker Pelosi and others to change course for the sake of healthy relations of our countries."
