Altun’s message for May 27, 1960: “The source of power is now the will of the nation in Turkey”

Presidency’s Director of Communications Prof. Fahrettin Altun said: "We know very well that pro-tutelage circles are waiting for an opportunity. However, they should know that Turkey today is not the Turkey of the past. The source of power is now the will of the nation in Turkey."

Altun shared a post about the anniversary of May 27, 1960 military coup on his Twitter account:

Noting that May 27, 1960 was the date when those who established a tutelage system in Turkey with a military coup took to the stage by neglecting the will of the people, Altun said: "While our democracy was tarnished, many people from the world of politics, media, academia, law and civil society stood by the putschists as joint offenders. The same mentality was also on the stage on March 12, 1971, September 12, 1980, and February 28, 1997.”

Altun added: “The epic resistance of our nation who said ‘Enough is enough!’ against the putschists during the coup attempt of July 15, 2016 was a turning point. Of course, today we know very well that the pro-tutelage circles are waiting for an opportunity both within and outside Turkey. However, they should know that Turkey today is not the Turkey of the past. The source of power is now the will of the nation in Turkey.

Today, under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan 'who does not recognize any power over the power of the people', we are moving ahead with our robust democracy, which is our greatest wealth. There is no place for coups, juntas, and tutelage on this blessed path! On the 59th anniversary of the May 27 coup, I commemorate all of our democracy martyrs and particularly the late Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and Ministers Hasan Polatkan and Fatin Rüştü Zorlu.”
