Altun: “Sanctions and threats will not deter us from protecting our national security interests”

On his Twitter account, Director of Communications Prof. Fahrettin Altun shared a message about the US Senate's resolution to recognize the 1915 Armenian events as "genocide”.

Stating that the attitude of some members of the US Congress undermined Turkish-American relations, Altun said:

“The sanctions bill that passed yesterday in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Armenian resolution that passed today in the Senate endanger the future of our bilateral relationship. Since the beginning of the Peace Spring Operation, we’ve conveyed to our American counterparts the reasons and the goals of our military operation in northern Syria. Sanctions and threats will not deter us from protecting our national security interests.

We refuse to compromise our national security just because some members of US Congress are uncomfortable with our military operations in Syria. Allying with the YPG was an unwise policy from the beginning.”

Pointing out that they would continue to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens in the face of terror threats, Altun added: “In every previous attempt to politicize history by some members of the US Congress, we reiterated our position to form a group to study it. We expressed that history should not be something that divides nations but unites them. But some members of the US congress in the last few months made every attempt to disregard the viewpoint and sensitivities of a NATO ally and acted irresponsibly to strain the ties between two nations and two states.

The resolutions will not bring any good to the relations between Turkey and the US. As we stated previously we expect our Armenian brothers to stand up and prevent the US Congress to destroy any attempt to reconcile our differences through scientific and academic channels. History will note these resolutions as irresponsible and irrational actions by some members of the US Congress against Turkey. They will go down in history as the responsible party for causing a long lasting damage between two nations.”
