Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun, noting that Turkey has been a key member of the NATO alliance and played a crucial role since the beginning, said that, “As a staunch member continuing to perform our duties for the alliance, we will seek to improve the effectiveness and relevance of NATO.”
Regarding the French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement that Turkey, who launched the Operation Peace Spring against YPG/PKK, should not expect solidarity from NATO allies Fahrettin Altun shared a message from his Twitter account.
Altun stated the following:
“Transatlantic alliance’s strength and effectiveness is key to the collective security and wellbeing of its member states. As every other international organization, NATO needs reforms and revisions over time. It’s the NATO members’ responsibility to guide this process. Turkey has been a key member of the NATO alliance and played a crucial role since the beginning. As a staunch member continuing to perform our duties for the alliance, we will seek to improve the effectiveness and relevance of NATO. In every leaders’ summit, we put forward our recommendations and call on our fellow members to understand national security concerns of Turkey. Every responsible member state and their leaders need to bring their suggestions for reform while pursuing common interest and security for all. We can transform this organization that corresponds to the security challenges of our time. NATO can be more relevant and effective if we work together. To blame the organization for one’s own foreign policy challenges, poor policy choices, increasing strategic irrelevance, and domestic consideration is unfair to NATO. It is unfair to the French people as well.”
