Türkiye’s first laser weapon operational

The Turkish Naval Forces Command has received the NAZAR Laser Electronic Warfare System, the country's first laser weapon system.

Laser weapon systems have recently grown in importance for intercepting third and fourth generation missiles.

Meteksan Defense in Türkiye also launched the NAZAR project for this purpose. The system's full-scale prototype passed its initial tests in October 2012.  The NAZAR system was carried on a frigate for testing. Exhibited at the International Defence Industry Fair in 2021, the system’s turret features 11 windows in two rows.

Missiles approaching the area where the NAZAR system is deployed are illuminated with a laser source of various wavelengths, resulting in a "cat's eye glow" on the seeker head. The system's cameras detect this glare and begin to follow it. It directs a focused laser beam in the correct modulation towards the seeker coil while following. Thereby the seeker goes blind, unable to locate its target.

It is stated that the cost of the system is low and it can be used to protect important bases and civilian facilities.
