Türkiye seeks to become a regional leader in batteries

In a statement made today, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Türkiye seeks to become a regional leader in the production of batteries for electric vehicles as a result of an ambitious incentive programme.

“We offer investors a 4.5 billion dollar incentive package,” Erdoğan said at an event in Istanbul.

"We aim to become a regional production base by building a capacity of 80 gigawatt-hours by 2030,” Erdoğan said.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan added, "We have made battery production a priority area for our automobile industry to remain competitive."

Erdoğan also unveiled a five billion dollar incentive programme to boost the production of electric vehicles in Türkiye to ''at least one million vehicles per year.''

"Our goal is to attract investments in next-generation vehicles through research and development and engineering activities," the President said.

Türkiye relies heavily on its geographical location and EU customs deal to attract investors from China. In early July, for example, Türkiye reached a deal with BYD, an electric vehicle manufacturer.

The deal with the world champion in electric vehicles includes a billion-dollar investment and the creation of 5,000 employment opportunities.

Anadolu Agency reports that, in addition to BYD, at least five other Chinese vehicle manufacturers are considering building facilities in Türkiye.

TOGG, a Turkish electric vehicle manufacturer, and Chinese Farasis reached a partnership deal for the production of batteries.
