From Local Initiative to Global Movement
Under the leadership of Emine Erdoğan, wife of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the ‘Global Zero Waste Movement’ has become a beacon of sustainable living and environmental consciousness. It began in Türkiye in 2017 and has since expanded into a global initiative, with a recent online signing ceremony emphasizing the importance of individual participation in waste reduction. The ceremony marked the launch of the ‘Global Zero Waste Goodwill Declaration’, with President Erdoğan becoming the first signatory. The declaration signifies a commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more livable world.
Aiming for a Sustainable Future
President Erdoğan emphasized the significance of the Zero Waste Movement, which has evolved into a global brand since its inception under Emine Erdoğan’s patronage. Expressing satisfaction with the declaration of March 30 as International Zero Waste Day, a resolution co-hosted by 105 countries alongside Türkiye, he reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to future generations. The country’s goal for 2053 is to reach Net Zero Emission, a target that emphasizes the necessity for action, particularly from nations historically responsible for global warming.
Efficient Use of Resources and Climate Change Initiative
The Global Zero Waste Goodwill Declaration promotes the efficient use of limited resources to reach the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. It highlights the critical link between sustainable waste management, resource efficiency, and climate change, emphasizing the importance of waste reduction through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.
The declaration commits to promoting zero waste globally and supports initiatives that encourage responsible waste production and consumption. It also calls on UN member states, UN system organizations, civil society, the private sector, media members, and local governments to align strategies and programs to accelerate the global transition to a circular economy, thereby reducing the negative impact of waste on climate change.
Global Participation and Call to Action
Following the signing ceremony, Emine Erdoğan took to social media to rally environmental enthusiasts worldwide, encouraging them to sign the Global Zero Waste Goodwill Declaration and become a Zero Waste volunteer. Similarly, President Erdoğan used his social media platform to invite state and government leaders to join the Zero Waste Movement, emphasizing collective responsibility and action in combating the global waste problem and mitigating climate change.
The Global Zero Waste Movement, under the leadership of Emine Erdoğan, has transformed from a local initiative to a global cause. The commitment to sustainable living and responsible consumption is not just a trend but a necessity for the survival of our planet. The signing of the Global Zero Waste Goodwill Declaration is a significant step toward acknowledging this necessity and taking collective responsibility for a cleaner, greener future.
