Türkiye's domestic tourism grew in the fourth quarter of 2024. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) published domestic tourism data for 2024, which includes the statistics for the fourth quarter. According to Hürriyet Daily News, travel expenditures of domestic tourists increased by 44.4 per cent compared to the same quarter last year, reaching 66 billion Turkish liras.
In 2024, Turkish people made approximately 66.8 million domestic trips. In comparison to the previous year, it increased by 8.7 per cent, reaching the highest recorded figure since 2019. On average, travellers spent 7.2 nights per trip. This is the shortest average period of stay since statistical records began in 2009. Travel expenditures increased by over 80 per centcompared to the previous year. Travel expenditures of domestic tourists in Türkiye reached a total of 419 billion Turkish liras in 2024. This corresponds to an 82.5 per cent increase compared to the previous year.
Recently, Türkiye was shaken by a strong earthquake. In general, Turkish travellers visit their relatives. Therefore, the main reason for domestic trips in Türkiye was visiting relatives, which accounted for 57.2 per cent of all trips. This was followed by travel for sightseeing, entertainment, and vacation purposes at 35.3%, while health-related travel ranked third with 3.7%.
