NATO’s eyes in space: Türkiye to build $300 million NATO satellite system (FAKTI BG)

The integration of Turkish satellites will enable imaging of larger areas in a shorter time and reduce the intervals between revisit cycles over the same area.

Türkiye will build a $300 million radar satellite system for NATO's needs, which Anadolu Agency (AA) reports Türkiye calls “NATO's eyes in space.“

The satellite system, named “IMECE“ and announced at the NATO summit in Ankara, will bring Türkiye's experience to the Alliance through a set of low-orbit communications satellites and early warning capabilities.

During the NATO summit in Ankara, hosted by Türkiye on 7-8 July, leaders also discussed space-related projects. It has been decided that the "IMECE" satellites, developed by the state-owned space technology company "TÜBİTAK UZAY" and the largest defence electronics company "ASELSAN," will be part of the organisation's technological architecture.

According to AA, the Turkish satellite system will assist in high-speed communication, intelligence, and missile tracking. This aims to enable NATO to achieve more sustainable and comprehensive capabilities in the areas of high-speed communication, intelligence gathering and missile tracking.

The integration of Turkish satellites will allow for imaging larger areas in a shorter time and will reduce the intervals between revisit cycles over the same area. This capability will enable faster data generation in crisis zones, along border lines, in maritime areas, during military operations, and in disasters and emergencies.
