NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that the Swedish government has met all of Türkiye's conditions in the dispute over Sweden's accession to NATO. "Sweden has fulfilled its obligations," Stoltenberg said on Sunday after meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in İstanbul. Stoltenberg stated that Sweden has also amended its legislation to accommodate the security concerns of Türkiye. The Secretary General described his meeting with President Erdoğan as "productive" and announced that new negotiations with Türkiye and Sweden will be held on June 12.
Since Thursday, new terrorism laws have been in effect in Sweden. Accordingly, joining a terrorist organisation, financing it, or otherwise supporting such participation constitutes a crime. The country has worked for years to strengthen anti-terrorism legislation. Stockholm expects the new legislation to contribute significantly to the resolution of the dispute with Türkiye. In July, the alliance will convene for a summit. In the second round of elections held a week ago, Erdoğan was confirmed as president, and Stoltenberg was also present at his inauguration.
