Ibrahim and President Erdoğan of Türkiye issue joint statement: Malaysia–Türkiye relations elevated to high-level strategic partnership (Guan Ming Daily)

In the joint statement issued by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye, it was stated that the elevation of bilateral relations between Malaysia and Türkiye to the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council reflects the strong mutual trust and political will between the two countries. The statement emphasised that the deepened cooperation will not be limited to traditional trade; it will also cover new growth areas such as technology, defence, education, research, and Islamic finance.

In the joint statement, it was expressed that, in a global environment filled with uncertainties, prejudiced clichés and mere expressions of friendship are not sufficient, and instead, there is a need for new policies that will strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, and all areas.

In his assessment on behalf of Malaysia, Ibrahim stated that a cooperation mechanism at this level is extremely rare and that Malaysia maintains such a high-level partnership with very few countries.

Prime Minister Ibrahim co-chaired the first meeting of the Malaysia–Türkiye High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council with President Erdoğan on Wednesday. Ibrahim's visit was part of an official visit to Türkiye that began on Monday and lasted three days, upon Erdoğan's invitation.

Ibrahim emphasised that the parties must quickly transform their commitments into tangible results, highlighting that traditional bureaucratic procedures are no longer sufficient in an increasingly competitive and uncertain global environment. He said, "We must act swiftly. In such a competitive and uncertain world, it is not possible to rely solely on routine bureaucratic procedures."

Ibrahim stated that the scope of cooperation should be expanded to include new areas such as educational and research partnerships, and drew attention to the importance of supporting this through institutional mechanisms to be established between the two countries.

Touching also on defence cooperation, Ibrahim stated that government‑to‑government procurement processes, particularly for naval and aviation assets, had provided significant benefits to Malaysia, and that these collaborations had brought with them a new partnership approach based on good governance and transparency.

Moreover, Ibrahim and Erdoğan also attended the signing of seven documents aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries across numerous priority areas. Among the signed documents was also the joint declaration on the establishment of the High‑Level Strategic Cooperation Council.

In addition, a letter of intent was signed between the Ministry of Home Affairs of Malaysia and the Türkiye‑based Desan Shipyard for the procurement of a Multi‑Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS). In the field of information and communication technologies, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Information and Communication Technologies Authority of the Republic of Türkiye (BTK), a memorandum of understanding on financial cooperation was signed between EXIM Bank Malaysia and Türk Eximbank, and a memorandum of understanding on investment cooperation was signed between the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and the Investment and Finance Office of the Republic of Türkiye.

The two countries also exchanged the minutes of the first meeting of the Malaysia–Türkiye Joint Higher Education Committee.
