President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye said he plans to discuss a solution to the Ukraine issue with US leader Donald Trump on 6 January.

Speaking after Friday prayers, President Erdoğan stated, "I am maintaining my contacts with both Putin and Trump." On Monday, the Coalition of the Willing Summit will take place in Paris, and Hakan Fidan will attend the meeting on my behalf. On Monday evening, we will speak with President Trump by phone to discuss solutions for Ukraine and the situation in Palestine."

Turkish officials have consistently shown their willingness to offer a platform for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine and have indicated hope that the leaders will meet to address the Ukraine issue. Representatives of Russia and Ukraine held three rounds of talks in İstanbul in 2025.

On 1 January, Türkiye’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan, Head of National Intelligence İbrahim Kalın, and Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov met in Ankara.
