Erdoğan expresses his hope for a de-escalation of tensions between the US and Venezuela (Interfax)

During his meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Türkiye hopes Washington and Caracas keep their communication channels open and that both countries manage to prevent rising tensions.

In the statement issued by the Presidency following the telephone conversation, it was noted that "President Erdoğan emphasised the significance of sustaining open communication channels between the United States and Venezuela and expressed optimism that the tensions would be alleviated promptly."

The leaders engaged in discussions regarding regional issues and the state of their bilateral relations.

Washington alleges that Caracas is involved in the smuggling of drugs into the United States. Simultaneously, Washington is working to apply pressure on Venezuela to compel Maduro to step down.
