In a phone call, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye urged President Donald Trump of the United States (US) to continue diplomatic efforts regarding the war in Iran. During the conversation, Erdoğan emphasised the importance of diplomacy.
At the same time, he expressed hope that negotiations with Iran would resume soon, according to a statement from the Presidential Office in Ankara. Türkiye will continue to support these peace efforts.
A framework agreement reached in mid-June between Iran and the US aimed to secure a ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and a long-term peace settlement. It provided for a 60-day deadline to resolve particularly contentious issues, such as how to handle Iran’s nuclear programme.
The allotted period has now expired, but no significant progress has been made at the diplomatic level. Both parties had already violated the agreed-upon ceasefire and other provisions of the agreement in recent weeks.
