Chery Automobile Co. Ltd., a Chinese car manufacturer, intends to establish a $1 billion electric vehicle factory in Türkiye. The Interfax agency reported the news.
The factory to be established in Samsun will have the capacity to manufacture 200,000 electric vehicles annually, according to sources. The factory will manufacture car components and assemble electric vehicles.
The project also aims to establish an R&D facility. The investment is expected to provide jobs for almost 5,000 individuals.
Chery's factory will bolster the influence of Chinese automobile manufacturers in Türkiye. Türkiye is emerging as a significant hub for exports to Europe thanks to the customs union with the EU. Last year, BYD Co. Ltd., another Chinese automotive giant, had disclosed its intention to construct a factory in Türkiye that is similar in size ($1 billion).
Additionally, Türkiye is an expanding market for electric vehicles. In 2024, 11% of the new vehicles sold in the country were electric automobiles.
