Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry emphasised that all bilateral issues, regional developments and challenges faced by Egypt and Türkiye were addressed during his meetings with his Turkish counterpart in Cairo.
At the joint press conference held after the meeting with Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu at Tahrir Palace, Shoukry said, “We have discussed the mutual appointment of ambassadors between Cairo and Ankara, and this will take place when the right time comes.” Çavuşoğlu, on the other hand, stated that he addressed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's upcoming visit to Cairo to meet with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Yesterday morning, the Turkish Foreign Minister began his visit to Cairo. This is the first time in ten years that the Turkish Foreign Minister has visited at the invitation of Sameh Shoukry, who visited Türkiye following the terrible earthquake.
Shoukry first held bilateral meetings with his Turkish counterpart at Tahrir Palace. After this, meetings between the Egyptian and Turkish delegations were held under the chairmanship of the two ministers. During the meetings, all aspects of bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of common concern, were discussed. The two ministers then held a joint press conference with the participation of many representatives from Egypt, Türkiye and the international press.
Shoukry stated that the normalisation process of relations between the two countries was addressed in all fields during the talks, which lasted more than two hours, and emphasised that given the critical importance of these relations to both countries, the discussions were open and explicit.
Minister Shoukry also stated that there is political will on the part of the two countries' leadership to fully normalise their relations for the benefit of their respective peoples.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs said, “The normalisation process of relations will soon fulfil its purpose, with relations gaining new momentum and strengthening,” emphasising that it is important to have a full understanding between the two countries, and he also pointed out that diplomatic relations have not been interrupted before, even during recessions.
The Minister said, “A new era is beginning in the relations between the two countries, and greater stability will positively impact the people of both countries.”
On the other hand, the Turkish Foreign Minister stated that the relations with Egypt are "historic" and expressed his gratitude for the support Egypt offered to his country after the devastating earthquake. He pointed out that joint steps were taken to develop relations with Egypt.
Çavuşoğlu stated that in the upcoming period, the two countries would focus on mutual appointments of consuls general and ambassadors. He also highlighted that diplomatic relations between the two countries would be strengthened to reach the highest level in the near future.
