Director of Communications Altun: “Let us instead extinguish the fire of hate with Islam’s message of peace”

Stating that Europe's racists hide behind words like freedom and democracy to incite violence against Muslims, Presidency's Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun made the call, "Let us instead extinguish the fire of hate with Islam's message of peace."

Director of Communications Altun shared a post on his social media account on the racist discourses and acts against Islam and what it holds sacred.

In his post, Altun noted, "Europe's racists hide behind words like 'freedom' and 'democracy' to incite violence against Muslims. Their predecessors did not respond to appeasement then. They won't respond to it now. Let us instead extinguish the fire of hate with Islam's message of peace. Ramadan Mubarak."

The post included a video prepared by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications that featured the racist statements regarding Islam, the Quran, and Muslims made by European far-right politicians.

The video stated that far-right extremism was a growing problem in the continent of Europe, and this ideology was fuelled by racism, Islamophobia, xenophobia and anti-Semitism.

Stating that the rising popularity of the far-right throughout the European Union (EU) was an extremely concerning development, the video noted that after years of marginalisation, this hate-inspired movement was going mainstream in many Western countries. The video made the following statements:

"In France, Marine Le Pen pushes a xenophobic and anti-Islamic agenda. She has compared Muslims praying in the streets to the Nazi occupation of France and proposed the banning of the Muslim headscarf.

Austria's right-wing populist Freedom Party members are well-known for their Islamophobic views and constantly targets Muslims with hate speech. The Party's leader, Norbert Hofer, has said the holy Quran is more dangerous than Covid-19.

Sweden's third-largest Party, the far-right Sweden Democrats, campaign on anti-immigrant rhetoric. The Party's leader Jimmie Akesson has called Islamism the Nazism and Communism of our time.

The Greek Cypriot ELAM has undertaken many violent acts against the Turkish Cypriot minority and aims to eliminate the Turkish Cypriot presence in Cyprus.

In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders and his Party for Freedom targets Muslims with Islamophobic rhetoric. Wilders openly propagates his anti-Islamic agenda, pushing to ban all mosques and the holy Quran in his country. He has also suggested placing a tax on women who wear hijabs and closing Dutch borders to Islamic immigrants. After his verbal attacks on Islam's places of worship and its holiest book, Wilders is targeting Islam's holiest month, Ramadan. The far-right Dutch politician posted a video calling to 'Stop Islam, stop Ramadan' and continued with the message that 'Islam does not belong in the Netherlands'. These are the many faces of the far-right extremism in Europe."

Expressing that their racist and Islamophobic speeches were unacceptable and had no place in a modern, civilised society, the video emphasised that Islam was a religion that preached peace and condemned extremism, racism and violence.

The video underlined that with more than 2 billion followers living on all seven continents, Islam was the world's second most practised faith in the world, and made the following statement:

"Türkiye calls on the international community to condemn these acts of hate against Islam. The greatest response we can give to right-wing extremists is showing tolerance, respect and understanding of everyone's religion, race and culture. On behalf of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, we wish Muslims throughout the world a happy, healthy Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak."
