Concerning the statements of US Presidential Candidate Joe Birden, Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun said, "Turkey will not allow our democratic politics to be disturbed by such irresponsible statements. Our country will continue our national struggle under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan."
In a thread on his Twitter account, Altun stated that Biden’s remarks he made in December but reported by the media today reflect the games being played over Turkey and their interventionist attitudes.
Stressing that these remarks were not in line with democracy and the nature of Turkish-American relations, Altun commented, “We believe that the current US administration would find these undiplomatic remarks unseemly of a presidential candidate of our NATO ally. Turkey is not a country that can be made a tool in domestic politic games.”
Highlighting that it was a democratic necessity for the American political institutions and public opinion to disregard these irresponsible statements, which were clearly a product of a desire to score domestic political points, Altun noted the following:
"On top of all this, it’s sad (though not surprising) that the opposition politicians in our country have yet to denounce these remarks that raise questions in the minds of our people and are insulting to the Turkish nation’s democratic will and sovereignty. Turkey will not allow our democratic politics to be disturbed by such irresponsible statements. Our country will continue our national struggle under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. No one can attack our national will and our democracy, nor can any one question the legitimacy of our President elected democratically by our nation's votes. Those who dared as such were taught a lesson on the night of July 15, 2016. Just a friendly reminder!"
