President Erdoğan said, "We see COP31, which Türkiye will host, as a major opportunity to translate the global resolve to address the climate crisis into tangible outcomes."
The book "Climate Diplomacy", which examines the importance of climate diplomacy in the context of global climate policies and international cooperation, as well as Türkiye’s efforts in this field, has been published by our Directorate.
Featuring a foreword by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the book helps strengthen a shared sense of responsibility to address climate change. In his foreword, President Erdoğan highlighted Türkiye’s efforts to combat climate change and the importance of global cooperation. Describing COP31, which Türkiye will host, as a significant opportunity to turn global climate goals into tangible results, President Erdoğan called for shared responsibility in building a fairer and more sustainable future.
Drawing attention to the effects of climate change on food, water, soil and biodiversity, President Erdoğan stressed the need to reassess existing production and consumption patterns.
Emphasising that Türkiye remains firmly committed to its efforts to protect the environment, President Erdoğan underscored the importance of expanding the Zero Waste Movement globally. Emphasising the collective duty to prevent future generations from inheriting a world stripped of its natural resources and plagued by escalating environmental issues, President Erdoğan noted that they place a high value on the Zero Waste Movement's ability to lead a lasting transformation in societies' production and consumption habits, which is based on the efficient use of resources, the prevention of waste, and the protection of the environment.
The book "Climate Diplomacy" focuses on the COP31 process
With the COP31 process at its core, the book sheds light on the role of international cooperation and climate diplomacy in combating climate change in the context of current developments.
"Climate Diplomacy," written in both Turkish and English, provides a broad viewpoint on themes ranging from global climate policies and international agreements to Türkiye's green transformation ambitions and the Zero Waste Movement. The book views climate change not only as an environmental issue but also as a multifaceted challenge that is inextricably tied to economic development, international relations, energy security, and global governance.
The book comprises six main chapters. The first chapter presents the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of climate diplomacy. The second chapter delves deeply into climate change's natural and human-induced causes, as well as its environmental, economic, and social consequences. The third chapter examines the international organisations, actors, and conventions that have contributed to the advancement of global climate governance. The book's fourth chapter touches upon the historical growth of the Conference of the Parties (COP), the UNFCCC's top decision-making body, and its critical role in developing climate policies. The fifth chapter addresses Türkiye’s policies aimed at combating climate change. The sixth and last chapter offers a comprehensive evaluation of the contributions made by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change to Türkiye’s climate diplomacy, as well as the initiatives and activities it has undertaken.
