Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of Renewable Energy Investments of 2025, President Erdoğan said: “Foremost among Türkiye’s priorities, of course, is to curtail foreign dependency in energy and make the most of our own resources. The target of our more local and more renewables strategy through a national energy and mining policy is to eliminate foreign dependency in energy.”
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered a speech at the Opening Ceremony of Renewable Energy Investments of 2025 in Ankara.
Noting that Türkiye’s energy demand is growing further year by year, just like that of other rapidly-developing countries, President Erdoğan stated that Türkiye’s energy demand has doubled over the past two decades.
“Our electricity consumption in 2025 increased by 2.1 percent year-on-year. We foresee that our electricity demand will see a 50 percent increase by 2035,” President Erdoğan said. “Currently, the share of imported resources in our energy supply is around 57 percent. Our imports bill in energy, though changing from year to year, is somewhere between $60-100 billion. Let me underline that Türkiye is the 16th biggest economy in the world and sixth in Europe. Our average growth rate over the past 23 years is 5.3 percent. Growth figures of the first quarter of 2026 were announced on Monday. In the first quarter of this year, the Turkish economy recorded a 2.5 percent growth compared to the same quarter of the previous year, therefore maintaining its growth for 23 quarters in a row despite the shocks it has underwent. We hope to carry this momentum into 2026, which means increased energy consumption. Foremost among Türkiye’s priorities, of course, is to curtail foreign dependency in energy and make the most of our own resources. The target of our more local and more renewables strategy through a national energy and mining policy is to eliminate foreign dependency in energy. We attach great importance to diversifying energy resources, boosting efficiency, and utilizing renewable energy resources.”
