President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan shared the following message on 24 October, marking United Nations Day and the 81st Anniversary of the Founding of the United Nations:
"On behalf of my country and my nation, I wholeheartedly congratulate the 81st anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (UN).
I first and foremost congratulate UN Secretary-General António Guterres and all United Nations personnel serving in our country and around the world.
Founded in the aftermath of two World Wars with the resolve 'to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war', the UN has assumed a significant responsibility since its inception for maintaining international peace and security and for promoting development and prosperity.
The global challenges we face today, including wars, humanitarian catastrophes, climate change, hunger and poverty, racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia, indicate that the importance of the UN’s founding mission has not diminished but has, on the contrary, increased even further.
Today, humanity continues to long for a future in which the collective will enshrined in the UN Charter is translated into action, wars come to an end, and lasting peace prevails.
For the UN to duly fulfil these noble responsibilities it has undertaken, it remains in the common interest of humanity for all nations to uphold the UN Charter more resolutely and to support reforms aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the primary bodies of the UN.
In this regard, restructuring the UN Security Council into a fairer, more inclusive body capable of meeting the expectations of the international community has become particularly significant.
The crises and conflicts across various regions of the world, particularly the genocide in Gaza that has claimed the lives of more than 74,000 Gazans, clearly demonstrate the sheer urgency of this need.
In this spirit, we support the UN80 Initiative launched by the Secretary-General and work closely with the Organisation toward our goal of making İstanbul a United Nations hub.
With these thoughts, I celebrate United Nations Day on 24 October and, with the conviction that a fairer world is possible, reiterate our determination to continue our efforts to make the international system, with the UN at its centre, more effective and inclusive.
