President Erdoğan’s message on 18 March Martyrs’ Day and Çanakkale Naval Victory

“We commemorate with immense pride and profound emotion the anniversary of the Çanakkale Victory, one of the most glorious epics in our nation’s history, and we remember with mercy, gratitude, and deep appreciation our heroes who made Çanakkale impassable.

Çanakkale is more than just a battle; it is an unparalleled epic that proclaims to the world our faith, sacrifice, patriotism, and sense of nationhood. The struggle waged by faith-filled hearts at Çanakkale bears witness to the fact that our nation will never surrender its freedom and independence, marking a historic turning point.

Our heroes, hailing from all across Anatolia, united in heart and purpose – men and women, young and old – and defended the homeland at the ultimate cost of their lives. This great resistance demonstrated by our ancestors changed not only the fate of our homeland but also that of oppressed nations suffering under persecution in many parts of the world.

The heroism displayed at Çanakkale stands as one of the strongest symbols of our nation’s brotherhood, solidarity, and shared destiny. Today, as we advance toward the “Century of Türkiye” goals with the same spirit and determination, we draw strength from this sacred legacy entrusted to us by our ancestors.

The spirit of Çanakkale will remain our greatest source of inspiration against any threats to our nation’s unity and solidarity. We will continue to work with all our strength to lead this sacred homeland—entrusted to us by our martyrs—into a stronger, more prosperous, and more secure future.

With these thoughts in mind, I respectfully commemorate, with deep reverence, gratitude, and appreciation, particularly Ghazi Mustafa Kemal, as well as all the heroes of Çanakkale, our noble martyrs and veterans, on the occasion of the 18 March Martyrs' Day and the anniversary of the Çanakkale Victory.

May their souls rest in peace.
