President Erdoğan: “The US should do more to assist Afghan refugees”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that the US needed to take on more responsibility in the Afghan refugee issue, saying, "Why has the US been there for the last 20 years? First this question should be answered by the United States."

President Erdoğan spoke to the American CBS television in New York, where he is attending the 76th session of the UN General Assembly Meetings.

In a snippet shared from the interview, which will be aired in its entirety on Sunday, when President Erdoğan was reminded of his statement that Türkiye would not become a "refugee warehouse" and asked if the US should take responsibility for Afghan refugees, he responded, "The US has failed to meet its obligations. We have more than 300,000 Afghan refugees. We will no longer be able to afford to welcome any more Afghan refugees."

President Erdoğan said that the US should do more to assist Afghan refugees, adding, "Why has the US been there for the last 20 years? First this question should be answered by the United States"
