President Erdoğan congratulates Busenaz Sürmeneli, gold medallist at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called and congratulated the national athlete Busenaz Sürmeneli, who won the gold medal in boxing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

After the medal ceremony held at the Kokugikan Arena, President Erdoğan spoke on the phone with Busenaz via Minister of Youth and Sports Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoğlu.

Congratulating Busenaz, President Erdoğan said, "I watched the last moments with tears in my eyes. I am overjoyed. As a nation, we are moved. Çakıroğlu won the silver medal, and you, Sürmeneli, received the gold. I congratulate you on behalf of myself, my family and my nation."

Thanking President Erdoğan for his remarks during the phone call, Busenaz said, "Back in 2013 during the rally in Sultanbeyli, I came to you and said 'I will make it to the Olympics, win the Gold Medal, and I promise that I will gift it to you.' Here I am now, Buse, keeping my promise. I am gifting this medal to you."

National Boxing Team Coach Cahit Süme also expressed his gratitude to President Erdoğan and said, "Dear Mr. President, I salute you with respect. How happy we are for being able to make you happy. We would like to thank you for all your support for us."
